After using the search function to very little avail, I have to ask - what are the functional differences between the 3 generations of S&W semi-automatic pistols? I've heard that the main difference between 1st and 2nd is the adition of the firing pin block. Is this true? What other changes are there?
FWIW, I really love this forum - good solid information without a lot of juvenile d**k measuring. I credit this forum (and the information that I gleaned from it) with helping me make the decision to purchase a LE trade-in Model 469. I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival at my local FFL.

!st Gen: Aluminum frames (mostly), two digit model numbers, 9mm (mostly), double action (mostly), no firing pin block.

2nd Gen: 3 digit model numbers, with FP block, first digit is frame material, last two signify model series. For example, 659 is stainless model 59, 639 is stainless model 39, both in 9mm, and 645 is stainless .45 ACP. The alloy frames began with 4, such as 439, 459, and carbon steel began with 5, such as 559.

3rd Gen: All sorts of other improvements and four digit model numbers, with first two generally signifying model series, third digit certain features and last digit the frame material. Example is 5906, meaning 59 series, standard traditional DA and stainless frame or 5904, meaning 59 series, traditional DA and alloy frame. There were a few exceptions, and there are some good charts around, but you get the idea.

There is a Notable Thread in the "sticky " section that has a lot
of info.
