Iv got one in my dur..... Basic model.. Its close to the face of the bolt... My guess is that its done to balance the weight.

I think someone thought that a hole blew in the bolt carriage in another thread, but turns out that most of us have that hole, even the brand new guns. The hole even looks rough, like a defect or structural problem, but it's something many of us have.

+1.....mine has the same rough-looking hole, now, but the gun runs beautifully! I'm not sure what the function of the hole is, but when I sent mine in originally for warranty work, my original bolt (which they replaced) did not have ANY holes at all.

What's with that, I wonder.........?

OK, Guys, Here's MY theory of the Holes in the Bolts:

When S&W realized that they had a problem with the M&P 15-22 getting all those FTE's they tried everything they could think of but they just couldn't find a fix for it that worked!

Their customers were getting very angry and impatient with the many round trips back and forth to and from the factory!

But they still got the FTE's!

What, oh what were they going to do?

They couldn't let their reputation suffer any longer so they tried this desperate measure:

They contacted "The Holy See" (the Pope) to bless the S&W M&P 15-22 bolts!

So, now if you get one with the holes (one or two holes, small or large holes) = They have been made "HOLY" by the POPE (no less) and you should be thankful - You now own one that has saved the S&W reputation!!!:p

(jk )
