Hi everyone! I just got my new m&p shield 40 today and when I get a new pistol I always field strip it and check it out. When I got my new shield stripped I noticed it was horribly dirty inside, like someone had run about 50-100 rounds through it and not cleaned it. I bought the pistol from my local gun shop as a new pistol. I am just wondering if anyone else might have noticed this when first stripping their shield new before firing it. Is it normal or did I get taken by my gun shop?

Yep, clean and oily. you got taken by your local gun store. They sold you a used gun for a new gun price.
I'd be angry and take it right back to talk to the manager.

Well I've been beating my head against the wall about this, so to speak and the casing is dated 1-29-2014 and the sticker on the box has in pen, hand written D and below the D is the date 2-28. So either that 2-28 is the date it was returned or the date that the dealer received the pistol from s&w. Considering I bought the pistol only three days after that I've almost convinced myself it came from the factory looking like that. The shop did have to hold the gun one day because state offices had closed down and they said they couldn't get my background check done. Does any of this sound plausible?

Manufacturers routinely pull a unit off the production line and submit it to some quality control testing. This may have happened with your pistol. FWIW, unless it was previously sold to somebody else before being sold to you, it is still legally considered 'new'. Maybe not unused, but legally new.

I'm going to guess that the pistol is new but I'm still going to call the shop and ask them. And no the shop does not have a range. Thank you all for your input it is much appreciated!

My 9MM Shield had some powder residue in the barrel from the test firing. Not "dirty" but not sparkling clean either.

Never really thought any more about it.

I think the earlier mention of yours being one of the random ones pulled off the line to have extra rounds fired through as part of QC is probably about right. At least you know it probably worked through whatever the factory may have shot through it.

If it's really eating at you, contact the store they will probably tell you the same thing though.

Be very careful before accusing your LGS of selling you a used gun. You may be thrown out the front door. Also, LGS's don't get guns from S&W. S&W sells to distributors, who then sell to the stores. Of course, if someone owns a chain of 10 gun stores, they might be able to get a "factory direct" deal if they purchase a pallet of guns. GARY

Yeah the more I think about it, I don't want to piss that particular shop off, there are at least 7 shops within 50 miles from me but this particular one beats every others prices by at least $50 on every weapon they sale and I've bought every weapon I own from them and never a problem before and they've never given me reason to question their ethics. The only thing bugging me is what if it was returned due to a problem with the pistol or I can look at it like it has some rounds through it so it should be good. I think I'm just going to take it to the range put it through its paces and see what's what with it.

just got my new shield40 today and was surprised when I pulled it down and it was pretty clean for a new M&P...not all guncked up like usual...can't wait to get to the range
