The 586 is the Distinguished Combat Magnum. The 686 is the Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless.

The Model 19 is the Combat Magnun, and the Distinguished Combat Magnum is what they called the new L frame models (adjustable sight).

Here's the names off of the S&W Product Guides/parts list of the era:

Model 581/681 - Distinguished .357 Service Magnum Revolver
Model 586/686 - Distinguished .357 Combat Magnum Revolver

The M586/M686 Distinguished Combat Magnum was aimed at the PPC revolver competition shooter, hence the "Distinguished" shooter classification per NRA regulations. Up to this point, the Colt Python was the instrument of choice for many in this higher than Expert classification.

So nobody knows how many were made, what year they started and ended... I was hoping for some information.. I guess I'll have to hit up S&W directly.. I love this revolver, don't fire it much anymore. Wonder how much it's worth these days...

According to SCSW, the black stainless 686's were manufactured in 1988. The 6" version was product code 104248, and the number produced was not indicated. The 4" version was product code 104250, with 1559 produced.

Aceman58, the matte black 586-3 was a run of approximately 1,969 in the 4 inch. Product code 103591. April of 1989 IIRC.

Very nice sixgun. I've got the limited edition blackened stainless 686-3 in 4 inch. One of my favorite L-frames. I'm always watching for a 4 inch matte 586 to compliment it. Regards 18DAI

Edited to add: I paid $650 for my blackened 4 inch 686-3, with no box or docs. I would expect your matte 586 to bring at least that much. More if box and docs are present.

I shot a bit of PPC in olden times, using a Python in the Pre-686 era because it was the only factory heavy barrelled revolver.
"Distinguished" referred to the use of a revolver in factory configuration with only trigger work and factory or commercially available grips to improve it. Ball ammunition required, no wadcutters.
Shooter classification was at all usual levels, Marksman to Master.

This is not the same definition as the bullseye shooter's Distinguished badge for which he accumulates points for high placement in matches.

S&W should have lobbied for more product placement. The 686 would have been a lot more realistic for the working sidearm of a Ga. deputy sheriff in the "Walking Dead." That show has spiked the demand for Zombie killing Pythons and drove the prices through the roof. Besides think about it, there are so many more S&W guns used by LEO's it would have helped them to get more guns out into the public and advertisement that no amount of money could pay for.
