DIY Upgrades for the Shield. Worth it!

This is the Deal: I love the Shield. :) Mine is in 9mm and is great! Having put about 1,000 rounds down range I took some time to upgrade. This is what I did:

Smith & Wesson Shield Pro i-dot AmeriGlo night sights. Green single dot rear night sight (U nothch rear), Green with Orange Outline front night sight. The Orange jumps out at you are you bring it up.

Trigger: Apext M&P Shield Carry Kit:

Apex Fully Machined Sear, Ultimate Striker Block Kit (Striker Block, Spring & Talon Tactical Rear Sight Tool) & Shield Spring Kit (Trigger Return Spring, Shield Slave Pin & Sear spring).

Results: Reduced trigger pull weight to about 5.7lbs, over travel and reset are now right on each time and rest from the Striker Block Kit is great. Gun has a much smoother uptake and reset.

This is a DIY drop in trigger and the video they give on the web is great. Worth the time and effort.

About how much was the total upgrade (include tool, sights and trigger kit)...guessing around $300.00

If you buy it from James, he'll do the sights and the slide portion of the Apex Kit at no charge. Just do the frame portion of the kit. Could get away with the sights and kit installed for $200.

yes but that take all the fun out of the project:)

Convert?!

Dont forget another "do it yourself" upgrade.

Convert either caliber to the other. 2 guns in 1 is better than just 1, lol

I don't think you can convert a 9mm Shield to 40SW just buy swapping barrels. i know you can convert 40 to 9.

Did the same upgrades to my Shield except installed Trijicon HD sights, APEX Carry Kit, and Talon rubber grip. It is indeed a pleasure with the right tools. The MGW sight tool is a great piece of equipment.

Now the wife wants I-Dots for her Shield!

Smitty's messing with you...
You CAN convert a .40 to a 9 (not 9 to .40) using just a barrel swap... But nobody sells JUST the barrel anymore. ;)
(nor just the .40 barrel & slide)

I have those same Ameriglo sights and LOVE them, day and night! The front sight is amazingly visible and the rear notch and dot make it extremely quick and easy to align for a perfect sight picture.

I just bought Talon grips, Apex Duty/Carry kit, and Meprolight night sights for my new Shield 9mm and I haven't even shot it yet lol. Fun times! :)

my shield is set up with factory rear sight with dots blacked out, a tritium front sight from Dawson Precision, and replaced factory sear with one from Apex. It all goes in a iwb holster from PJ Holster. My gun doesn't need anything else....Mike

I just had a gunsmith install those same Ameriglo sights as the OP--didn't feel sporty enough to try it myself. Can't wait to pick it up this weekend. I did put a set of Talon grips on. Haven't found a need to change the internals of my Shield at all.

I'm going to shoot mine tonight after CWFL class my wife is teaching.

Finally I took care of mine and did some upgrades. Polished all the trigger parts, it breaks nice, clean and crisp at 6lb. I'm happy with it.

-Trijicon NS
-Apex Sear
-Mag extension.

I got the 40 shield and fired many rounds with no problem. The trigger, however, made accuracy a problem. I was in local GS and they had a 40 shield from the performance center. I tried the trigger, loved the sights and bought it for a good price. No trouble selling my original 40. At the range I was able to hit 3x6 ft plate 4 of 7 shots at 50 yds. Wow. I found my PPP.

MGW Sight Tool made just for the Shield. I just used a lighter to heat the factory lock-tite on the set screw, removed it and then put CLP on both the front and rear. After an hour or so of soaking I used the tool and they came off without a mark to the slide or the factory sight. New sight went on without an issue. Like all things in the life, the right tool helps.

$289.00 for the tool? that is a huge chunk of change! just saying.

I have the Apex Duty/Carry Kits installed in two M&P 9mm Shields as well as the Ameriglo Dot over Dot night sights. Sights are a personal decision but I find that it gives me faster target acquisition. The trigger reset is great for faster follow up shots. The kits are excellent on the shield but I found that the kits seem to function better on my full size M&P as well as my compact. By the way Apex has great customer service.
