Doesn't S&W now make some revolvers w/o the infernal lock? Do current production 442's fall into that catagory? I looked on their website with no luck. Or is my only option a 442-0 or -1.

Thanks.

There are some 442-2 that have the lock, and some don't. I don't know what the S&W product code is, but it is on their website or someone here will have it. I am pretty sure Buds had some without the lock available, but I haven't looked lately.

I looked on Bud's site just this morning and they do have the non-lock version. I planned on getting one, but a local guy had a new, never fired lock type with a box of Winchester Supreme Elite personal protection ammo for $340! I couldn't pass it up and bought it a few hours ago. I can live with a lock at that price. ;)

Oh, and it is a 442-2 with lock

You can use the money U saved on the 442 to get the lock removed. ~ :)

Can it be removed??? I so, how do they plug the hole?
I have no intention of using it anyway. In fact I don't even have the keys for it. When I met the seller at his work, he had forgot to bring them, but says he is sending them to me.

One of my working 642's is a locker and I removed all the lock guts and left the hole. Doesn't look good, but like the greasy wrench out in my garage that doesn't look good, it works just fine. :)

Yes, it can be removed.
They fill the hole with a plug. But if I were having it done, I would also want the "arrow" removed from the frame.

Maybe there's someone here who's had it done that can post pics of the job?

Bought a NIB 442 w/o the infernal lock from Bud's yesterday.

The "check is in the mail" + 5 day wait + 2nd day air.

I'm looking forward to this gun being my new CCW gun. I also ordered a DeSantis Nemesis for it.

Derek at Bud's said that's the only model they have right now w/o the lock.

I don't own any revolvers with the "lock". Does it affect reliability. Why does everyone steer clear of them?

They are the work of the Devil.;)

I don't own a gun with the il, and won't buy one. I doubt whether they have any real effect on reliability, but they represent a departure from the old, accepted way of manufacturing S&W revolvers. I am a traditionalist. I own only one S&W with a non-pinned barrel (Mountain Gun 625-5) and won't buy any more.

I think it is more an aesthetic matter with many of us. The little butthole looking lock cavity is ugly.

All that said, I wouldn't rule out mechanical difficulties associated with the lock.

Edited to add: I did buy a new 442 without the lock for my daughter back in January.

I have a no lock 442 and just yesterday I put on lay away at Budsgunshop a Pro Series 642 which is cut for moon clips and does not have the lock.

The 442 with a SKU number having a 6 for the second digit (i.e. x6xxxx) has the internal lock, whereas the 442 with a zero for the second digit (i.e. x0xxxx) does not have the lock. If you dealer does not have any, I am fairly sure RSR, an S&W distributor (they only sell to dealers) has both the 442 and 642 WITHOUT internal lock in stock. (I do not work for them.)
