I just renewed our homeowners policy and was wondering if putting my guns on a separate schedule was worth the $$. My company wants $495/yr for about $30K insurance. That seems like quite a bit, since the guns are in a safe.

What do you think?

There are insurance companies that offer gun specific policies at better rates than most homeowners insurance. One in particular has been discussed here before, and is located (I think) in Virginia. Perhaps someone will follow up with the name.

Check the fine print for how much they'll cover the guns for if you *don't* have the separate clause. Usually it's $500 or $1000 ... total. Not per-gun.

A safe is not a foolproof protection for your guns, either - a fire safe rated for 30 minutes at 1400F may see higher temperatures for longer, or if it's in the basement and your house burns, you can probably expect it to be underwater for a while.

NRA offers insurance, and there are several other companies that will. Nice thing about the NRA's version is they don't ask for a list of guns or serial numbers for any gun you value under $2000 or so... Now I've got a safe full of $1999 collector's edition Hi-Point 9mm pistols.
