Hello All,

I remember some time back in the mid 1990's at a now long since gone gun shop named ILA in West Chester, PA (a good gun shop when it was in its prime) a Saturday promotional event was held called "Smith and Wesson Day."

ILA was a stocking dealer for S&W and always had a good selection on their product line. On that Saturday they had a gunsmith, (Performance Center Smith?) from the Smith and Wesson factory come out and set up a mini bench-shop, (tools, parts, etc) to offer ultra-sonic cleanings, small repairs, revolver once-overs, expert advice and improvements on actions. Of course, there was a limit to what one man could offer to a line of dedicated S&W fans with the time alloted...but I remember him being a 100% Gentleman...very professional, generous with his information and a joy to watch at his work. Thing was...all this was offered for FREE.

For sure, ILA sold a lot of guns that day...but that was sort of the point, no?

I was wondering if anyone else remembers these promotional events...and if they are still held from time to time. Thanks in advance for any input on the matter.

The LGS I was working at until recently still does it. A few of the current 'hot' S&W models are run on sale, the S&W Sales Rep is there, sometimes with another Rep. as well as a 'smith from the Performance Center. 'Mel' is our guy that always comes from the Performance Center. Been with S&W ~38 years IIRC.
Does simple tune ups on S&W revolvers, replacing simple parts as needed, etc., no charge. There is a large tip jar next to his set-up. The GS owner gives all proceeds to the local Boy Scout Troop, as well as helping them raffle off a donated long gun.
