I am trying to formulate my own version of Synthetic Safe Gun Scrubber or Shooters Choice version for cleaning my synthetic guns. The spray cans work great but are expensive and do not last long. Yes, I have some plastic guns.

The Synthetic safe formulas are Hexane or Heptane and Isopropyl. The Iso is easy enough but Hexane is not to be found at the Homer Depot.

After searching the web the closest I can find is Naptha (VMP solvent, Coleman Fuel etc)
Naptha=C6H6, Hexane=C6H14.

So the question is, do you think the Naptha is safe on the Dupont Zytel/ST8018/Nylon 66/glass filled nylon aka polymer guns.?

Mixing your own Gun Scrubber

For the last 10 years, instead of paying high dollar for "Gun Scrubber" I have been using on of three things:
Carborator Cleaner
Break Cleaner
Ed's Red
The basic Ed's Red is easy to mix. Go to Google and key in Ed's Red.

I have all of the above. Triclor in break cleaner is not real good for plastic, Eds has acetone. I use the brake cleaner and Eds on all metal guns. I made Eds even better by adding 1 part synthetic 30w oil. No, what I want is something to strip clean everything and then re lube.

I'm no chemist, but I have worked in the chemical industry (10 years) and I worked in a print shop growing up. Lose the idea of Naptha, for health reasons.

I know what you are saying. I used to pick up all my printing from a small hole in the wall print shop. Just walking in there got me dizzy. I do not know how they survived or if they all are dead by now:(. Not to worry, I have used far more deadly chemicals in my life, I respect what they are and can do. I am not doing anything different than the commercially sold products. Gun Scrubber, Hoppess #9, Brownells TCE (brake cleaner)

The Synthetic safe formulas are Hexane or Heptane and Isopropyl.

Heptane is "white gasoline." Still need some ventilation, but WAY safer than naptha.

CRC silicone spray uses heptane as the solvent and makes an excellent cleaner, leaving a little silicone residue behind. My favorite mag cleaner.
