Wife and I are considering dropping our land line phone to save $ and just have the cell phone. Most all of the calls are 1-800 sales calls anyway. Have any of you dropped your land line? (I guess that's what you call it).

The only negitive thing I can think of is when the cell tower gets over loaded with calls and the thing locks up so nobody can call or something like that happens. I know this from when we had a large earthquake about 10 years ago and everyone was calling everyone else and it was impossible to make a cell call but you could with the land line. But that was 10 years ago and maybe this wouldn't happen again.

I'd drop my land line in a heart beat, but the only way I can get DSL here is through the phone company, so....

A few years ago we had a thunderstorm and lightning struck the house. Fried out our cordless phone for the landline. I took that as a sign from God we were supposed to get rid of it.
It's been 4 or 5 years, and I don't miss it at all.

I know a guy who works for AT&Tand he said all house phones will become cellular or over the air. A block of house phones will have one small community antenna. Much cheaper for the phone company. No underground or overhead phone lines to lay or to maintain.

That's it then, off with the land lines head. Thanks.

Over the space of about 5 years my basic home phone from ATT (no long distance included) went from $25 to $50. So last year I dropped the "land line" and just retained DSL from ATT. Then the introductory offer on the DSL went to $43 from $25. ATT would not budge from the new charge and re-up me on the $25 introductory offer on DSL. So 2 months ago I Dropped basic ATT DSL and went for faster ATT Uverse internet for $25 a month on yet another introductory offer. There's no dial tone now on the 2 wire, so without testing it I'm assuming stuff like "magic jack" wont work. You can still make free calls using Google Gmail, but you need Chrome. So I've got Chrome on one computer so that if I misplace my cell I can call it and find it using Gmail caller.

I still have my land lines due to small children. I want them to be able to call 911 if needed and not have to search for my cell. I have a hard enough time keeping them away from my smartphone anyway! They can call their friends on the land line.

I've got both.

A cell phone for those that know me to call me on - and -

A landline for my DSL and depending on how bored I am to give me telemarketers that ignore the do not call list to hang up on or mess with their minds. In the winter it's my only stress relief.

I SORT of have both. I have my cell and that I use for almost everything I need to do EXCEPT for things that I don't want them calling me. So I have the MagicJack and it works great (with a good computer and fast line). I typically only use it for the answering machine part of it. I get a notification email when it gets a message and so I can listen to the attached .wav file.

There are places I just don't want to have my cell phone so I give out my MagicJack number (costs about $20 or $30 per year).

My cell phone is a phone, period. I don't play games on it, access the internet, transmit pictures, or any of that. It's a basic little flip model that I keep primarily for emergencies when I'm out. I've reached the age where if you fall you can break something important, like a hip. I won't use it when I'm driving, but will tell a caller I'll call back. One thing I did learn was to take the precaution, when there was a severe weather warning, to forward my land line to the cell in case the hard-wired service went out.

Now I'm thinking of changing carriers to AT&T on their introductory rate, and when they attempt to hose me after a year, switch back to the introductory rate with my present company. Should be able to keep that going for a while...

My power went out a couple of times, but the landline phone still worked. I'm keeping it as long as I can. I get better reception over it than I do on my walkaround chargeable phones and the cellphone, too.

And it doesn't need battery charging.

Just got new iPhones that work flawlessly. Two between us. Have a land line too. We have a 6 cordless handset system that is convenient around the house, shed and garage though. Probably will keep the land line for a while longer. Also a stand alone Fax that needs it.
