Just curious, If you buy a gun with the S&W presentation case do you keep it or sale it off?

Myself I see no use for them. I don't show my guns in any type setting where it would be needed. It's not a good place to store the guns, and they take up valuable space in my gun room/safe.

Does the value of a gun in the case bring more than the gun and case sold separately?

In my opinion, if the gun and the original box are correct for each other, store the gun elsewhere and keep the box. I have in the past sold boxes that didn't match the gun's era and at times turned around and bought a box that did match.

Are you talking presentation case as opposed to factory cardboard box?

I would never buy a gun that came in a presentation case. If you shoot it the value would go down. I buy guns to shoot. Keep the factory cardboard in case you want to sell later.

Presentation cases I only have one revolver that came with a presentation case and I would never consider selling the case by itself. Come on it's part of the total package. I had to learn that the presentation cases were not of long term storage, that is what Bore-Store bags are for.

I have sold guns that came with cases, but gave the buyer the option of paying $50 to $100 less if they didn't want the case. Wound up with quite a few cases as a result. I was surprised at how many guys could care less about them. Go figure.
f.t.

I think a really clean gun in a nice presentation case is worth more than the two separate, but I don't think the case adds much to a gun that is more of a shooter grade.

Anything that comes with my guns goes into a plastic bag to keep it clean and gets stored out of the way. It doesn't take up much space and doesn't eat. The guns get gun socks.

I recently bought a 1948 K-22 that came with the original blue/gold cardboard box. Without the box, I wouldn't have bought the gun.

The same goes for presentation cases. I might not be looking for a particular gun, but IF it has the box or the presentation case in this case, it suddenly becomes a lot more interesting. I half joke all the time that I bought the box, and the gun came with it.

So yea. I keep them.

I witnessed a guy pay $200 more for a Ruger Red Label shotgun, just because he wanted the cardboard box that came with it. Thought he was nuts.

I like the boxes, but I don't care if they are missing.

Presentation Cases are a completely different matter, altogether. If a firearm in a presentation case has been fired - it's not worth as much - but it's sometimes worth more than an unfired one without that presentation case!

I've never had a gun nice enough, or expensive enough, or exclusive enough to come in a presentation case. If I did, believe me I would save it. I wouldn't store the gun in it(I use rugs)but that case wouldn't be going anywhere without that gun. I know that when I check out a gun, if it has the original box & paper work, it is a bonus & a selling point to me. Not having these won't keep me from buying a gun, but it sure will keep me from paying top dollar. And if I ever sell one, being able to offer a prospective buyer a complete package is important also.

Exactly what I do even though I don't really have anything all that rare & collectible, never mind coming with a presentation case. New guns have their box with all the goodies stored in plastic crates out in the shed.

And yes... gun socks for the blue stuff. Saved quite a few dings going into & out of the safe.

Ivy only had one gun come in wood crate plus outer cardboard box, yup--still have both. My new .45--came in a "Tool Box" plastic case--yup--I kept it. Nothing else Ive bought came in or with anything--cept cardboard shipping box.

If it comes with it? it goes with it.

When I bought my 29-2 new back in the way, I just threw away the wooden box it came in. Seemed pretty useless at the time.
Didn't give it another thought until years later when I joined this forum.

I have two P&R 629's that came in wood presentation cases. I kept the cases even though the sprayed on flocking on the fitted interior is history.

Once I sold a guy a pretty beat up Win 92. We talking Cowboy gun here people. As he was leaving I yelled hey, come back, you forgot the box!
We laughed so hard he had trouble driving off.
I always save the box.

Imagine having modern commercial 'Original Parabellum Pistol' Lugers with all kinds of fancy commemorative engraving, gold inlays and throwing the boxes in the garbage.
