Do you think S&W will ever make a .308 semi-auto?

Got a question about why the military chose a 308?
Why not the 30-06?

....just wondrring

The 30-06 is an American Cartridge born and bred, the .308win is a commercial variant of the 7.62x51 NATO. And I just dont think those countries on the other side of the Pond were tough enough to shoot the 06'.
LMAO
wikipedia does have a good write up on the cartridge.

I would love to see a 7.62x51 M&P10 LOL

First i would LOVE for either caliber to be cheaper! I have a small stash of 7.62 NATO from various countries and im afraid to shoot them :banghead: this is also the reason i sold my Garand. I had a few thousand rounds of Greek 30-06 and i didnt want to waste any after the prices went up so i sold the whole package.

I was eyeing up the new Colt 308 AR and almost bought it but i already have a semi auto in that cal that im not shooting. Semi autos just eat ammo to fast! Maybe ill buy the new Ruger scout bolt rifle for slower feeding.

The 06 was developed for the military. The nato 7.62 (308) is a shorter cartridge and can operate in a shorter action and carry more ammo in a smaller space. I was trained with the M-14 in Basic training and I liked that rifle.....it was accurate and had enough punch. On the way to Vietnam, I was handed an M-16 that I had never fired and was not impressed with a varmint cartridge to kill the enemy with, it did the job when it did not jam. I would still prefer a 7.62 for a military cartridge...it has more range but you can't carry as much ammo....each round has its advantages and the 06 will be with us forever, not much it can't handle from chipmunks to elephants in the right hands. I plan on getting an AR-10 at some point and hope S&W come out with one.....they will if "we" let them know that we want one LOL. DPMS has a nice Lite Hunter in .243, 308 and 338 fed. I looked at one and almost bought it but did not want to pay $1500 for it....beautiful rifle and not too heavy. Also looked at the M-14 and was tempted but I like the new AR style better because its easy to adapt any sight to it.

The taper angle on the 308 is more favorable for FA than the 30-06. Whilst the BAR (Bad *** Rifle) was 30-06 and very reliable, it was a heavy, heavy piece of equipment. The 308 lost little in overall hit power, and the action is shorter and clears brass more easily when fired fast.
The 308 also offers a 10% weight savings in each piece of ammo; for every 10 rounds you carry, you get a free extra round with no weight penalty.

In the S&W wish list sub forum, I asked for a 'super Sport' a year ago!!!!
