Do You Try To Hide Your Gun Hobby When Workers Are In Your House?

I live in a rural area, so as redlevel just posted, anyone with an IQ over 75 would be able to deduce that we all have guns, in all our homes.

I open carry as a general default. That means whenever someone comes to the door, or comes into the home, they will most likely see the .357 magnum or .41 magnum in a leather thumb break holster on my belt. What they won't see is the Walther PPK/s in a pocket holster inside my front pocket.

Only required access by strangers to safe location is annual fire sprinkler inspection, which I supervise, during which the safe is covered up. Otherwise, when the home is empty, the locked safe is in a locked room.

Well back east in Md the gun shop sign at the end of the lane was pretty obvious...out here in Wyoming....no sign butI live on a ranch at the end of a road. Everybody knows we have guns. If I do have service people come in I just make it so they don't see guns or reloading items. Heck getting service people during hunting season is really hard...They're all out hunting

Out of sight, out of mind. Guys who proudly display their beautifully painted gun safe in the living room are begging for trouble.

In your situation, at the very least, cover all your reloading gear with blue tarps or something heavier than sheets. You want it to be completely covered up.

My stuff resides in 3 safes and only when I'm actually in the room are the door open safes closed. When our monthly bug shows up that room stays locked. And anytime we have company the safes stay locked and only door to that room is locked only is I'm not in it. Frank

This is where I'm at. Out of sight, out of the way, out of mind, no reason for anyone but me to go in there. There are scant few other cues scattered about the house, so I feel pretty good about the situtation.

In my fortress of solitude/man cave I have some things displayed in shadow boxes and a couple of cowboy rigs hangin' on a hall tree but there is nothing in that room that any kind of service person would need to see. When service people are in the house I simply close the door to that room, There are no weapons on display anywhere else in the house.

During the recent remodel I removed all the fire arms from the house accept for the Ruger SR-1911 which stayed out of site in the drawer of my night table. When they were working in there I had all that furniture in another room and had the Ruger in the room we were using.

There are a dozen 1860 to 1920 vintage S&W revolvers displayed in glass fronted cases on top of my roll-top desk which is in my home office where I spend a lot of time. (There are also several loaded handguns in various unseen locations throughout the house). On the rare occasion a stranger is in the house, the office door is closed. My loading/gun room is a separate closed door room that doesn't give any hints as t what is in it, and there is nothing in it a stranger needs access to. In a few cases conversations have revealed the person is a shooter and knows several of my shooter friends and open discussion may result in a gun or two being revealed.

Do you reckon that felon/plumber's helper might see those sheets covering your reloading stuff, or draped over your safe, notice those locked doors and closed off rooms, and wonder, "Hmmm . . . . wonder what this guy's covering that he don't want me to see?"

I agree with taking all precautions possible, but I believe we ain't really fooling anybody.

Anything I collect that is of value is put up or locked away. Guns, knives, sports memrobilia, my collection of Native American pottery, etc. Not to mention the motorcycles and cars I collect are all parked in the barn away from any service worker that comes on my property. I know it sound terrible and somewhat neuroticbutbi had a friend who had some things stolen right after workers had come on his 40 acres and did some fence work. They came back at night and with so much land he never knew where they got in.

the rooms in my house are transparent of any gun activity...EXCEPT my bedroom...S&W memorabilia (along with other favorites) are on display for my viewing pleasure....

I don't have any guns, so nothing to worry about.

But seriously, most of mine resides in a nephew's or brother in laws safe. I have only three soon to be four, at my place-hidden an locked.

YES!!!! NNTK-No Need To Know. Hey, how many people have had things stolen by their kids, or other relatives, or their kids friends, etc. The cleaning help ?

"Do You Try To Hide Your Gun Hobby When Workers Are In Your House?"

"Try to hide" doesn't even come into play. Someone has to know me really well to even have a clue there are guns in my house, even though there may be one or more guns in whatever room we happen to be in.

Home defense and self defense are not hobbies with me.

I am the workman generally. Plumber? Bah. Just use a bucket for your terlit and say you went "green".

Those times it is absolutely necessary to have a repairman over, I prefer to sit around nearly naked and sharpen a large knife or machete while staring into space. I find the whisk, whisk noise comforting. For some odd reason, visitors find it unnerving.

GatorFarmer;138721785 I prefer to sit around nearly naked and sharpen a large knife or machete while staring into space. I find the whisk said:
GF I do believe you is a sick sucker...but I like yer style!!!

By the way do you ever kinda laugh tonelessly with a hint of hysteria behind it??

Gator has only been in Wyoming for one winter, but he'll git there soon enough.:D;)

I don't have a lot to add except that living in an apartment the workers that come to my house is always the same guy.

That said, why should I let random strangers know what valuables I have in my home? Guns are easy to carry and easy to steal and easy to sell. No I don't let random strangers know I own them

Ack, if you knew what I knew about apartment maintenance guys. Especially in the slumlord business. I am sure that someone somewhere hires nice professional skilled people and runs background checks. But I am equally sure, from industry experience, that many others hire expendable ex cons and pay them under the table.

My best advice is always keep track of whether you are strangely missing any underwear or socks.
