I also posted this at S&W Revolvers 61-80 forum, I have a Model 60 serial number X67**, anyone know when she was born and BTW, can I shoot Federal Short Barrel +P's with her?

What's the dash number? If it's M-60-4 or higher, it is warranted for Plus P ammo. I was told this by the factory.
However, many use Plus P ammo in older M-60's. I wouldn't shoot it a lot in them,but they are evidently safe to fire.
S&W has said that any of their .38s with a Model number stamped on the frame is safe for Plus P's. I don't think the Speer Gold Dot ammo is any less safe than other Plus P rounds. The 125 grain (not the later Short Bbl. 135 grainer) is very accurate in my M-60-4.

Sam, you don't have enough of the serial number. You can't blank out that first letter or number and be able to tell.

The "X" is part of the serial number; I changed the last numbers to asterisks.

It can't be an X, Smith never had X serial numbered Model 60 gun. Are you sure you have a S&W?

I was looking where the cylinder locks up but if I look at the bottom of the grip it says "ANP98**", does that sound better?

Perfectly safe, but I wouldn't do it all the time, they tend to be more expensive and kick more.

Model 60s didn't come out 'til 1965 long after they started model marking in 1958, so any 60 should be okay with +P. Smith says any model maked gun is okay for +P, othertimes they say not, just depends on who you talk to. You know they make 60s chambered in .357 Mag, but these have a beefed up frame. My feeling is that I would not shoot it constantly with +P as it will excellerate wear ever so slightly, but would be okay for concealed carry. Just my opinion.

If you are worried about +Ps, just use the standard pressure Buffalo Bore 158gr LSWCHP. They work like +P (and kick like them!) but are advertised as safe in older guns that were not designed for +P ammo. I use them in my no-dash 60 and 49.
