DOB Model 67

Likely early in the year since 3K73962 being end of the year?
No. You cannot safely make that assumption, for two reasons:
1. Revolvers were not assembled in serial order;
2. Regardless of when they were assembled, they were also not shipped in serial order.

As a completely arbitrary example, in 1971, you could have a revolver serialized at 3K30000 that was assembled before a revolver serialized at 1K40000. It was not just a straight line. Only the assembly line logs, which are not available to us, would tell the real story.

Also, the numbers listed above (3K1 – 3K73,962.........1971) are not correct. The real range for 1971 is 3K1 to 3K31279. This comes from a list provided by Dr. Jinks, several years ago. And the Standard Catalog 4th, page 489, shows the same as the list from Dr. Jinks.

OP:

An easy way to get a good estimate of ship date is to search by putting most of your serial number in with a "*". You can do this in the SWCA Ship Date Request portion or in the general search. The first will give ship dates of similar # guns and the second with give you everything. So in your case I ran 3K17* and got "Model 15-3 serial number 3K17331 was shipped in May 1972" from the Ship Date Request by Roy Jinks. In the general search I found a couple threads on Model 67's. Either or all could be valuable to you. Non SWCA members obviously don't have access to the Ship Date's.

I stand corrected. Should probably put on my reading glasses when I read.

Every thread needs at least 1 picture. My no dash is a little later {1973} It does have the all stainless rear sights. Good S&W .38 Special. Bob

My 67 (serial 3k360xx) served a hard life before it came to me. An issue gun somewhere as evidence by a stamped rack number and then an issue gun for an Armored Car company where I purchased it during an issue of new model 65 duty revolvers. My gunsmith buddy refurbished it similar to the factory Combat Revolver Package. The original rear sight blade was too far gone to save.
A great shooter.
