Hello Gents,

Would some one be able to give me an approximate DOB for a M29-2 with the Serial No. N74XXX

It's a 6.5" barrel if that helps.

Much appreciated.

Best regards,

SCSW lists N600000 as 1979-1980, N700000 as 1980, and, n800000 as 1980-1983.

So, sometime in 1980 but no month.

Is it truly a 5 digit #? Those digits have tripped me up before.

If so, I'd say 1971-'72, as N100000 is 1973

Hello Gents and thank you :)

The request is for a buddy, going to get him to double check but he told me it's N74489

Might be an early one maybe?

Buddy got back to me, it's N74489 stamped on the Yoke area under the M29-2

Would this mean a very early production unit?

Probably shipped in 1972, the factory goes by ship (sales) date instead of production. The first ones were from 1956 (I think).

The model numbers first started being assigned in 1957, with the .44 magnum being designated Model 29. The -2 variant began around 1962, and the N prefix serial numbers began around 1969. Prior to that, all post war serial numbers (with a few exceptions of course!) began with an S.

Your buddy has a nice gun!

Thanks Gents, that actually answered two questions.

Looked at my recent project serial number and it's a M29-2 with a SXXXXXX number.

Glad I salvaged her and gave her a second life but now even more miffed with the previous owner.
