I just picked this up @ $75......primarily for the mother of pearl stocks.
It's a .38 w/ a 4" bbl. & CORRECT serial # 39868.

Best,

It was carried by a security guard a the Ide Textile Mill in Jacksonville AL according to the family that sold it to me.

Someone has applied a coat or two of cold blue and turned the gun black. They also failed to remove all the original nickel finish first.

Are you certain about the serial number? That number puts the revolver well into the 3rd Model production, but the top latch is clearly from a 2nd Model. That serial number places ship date around 1891. Can you make out the numbers on the top latch or the barrel assembly?

Correction: Looking closely at the latch, it is a 2nd Model latch, not a 3rd. The push button latch of the 2nd and 3rd Models are similar, but the 3rd is smaller.

I corrected the above post, after closely comparing the latch styles, it is a 2nd Model. The ship date estimate is still as accurate as you can get without a letter. 1889 to 1892 is the possible shipping date range, since they did not go out the door in serial number order.

I have an SH that has aged like yours to a brown rust color. I believe mine was originally blue. Been thinking about bead blasting it and then giving it a rust blue finish.

I can support that with a data point. I have a Third Model, #45135, that shipped in June 1892. Since according to the letter the Third Model started in 1890 at #41001, yours was likely at least made, if not shipped, thereabouts.
