Does anyone else have a M65?

+1 on the basic workhorse description, nothing fancy, just function. I have two 3" M65's, and one is my carry/truck gun.

I surely like mine. It's a CDNN very good condition purchased in early 08. I prefer the PC Magnas but find the Uncle Mike's that came on it allow for a more positive grip and draw from my duty holster. I qualified 50/50 with it using PMC 158 grain JSPs (boy, they sure let you know you've fired a Magnum!)

I carry it loaded with 125 grain Golden Sabers on-duty. Before carrying them I made sure they shot as well as the 158s. They were actually more accurate and better regulated to the sights than the 158s. (I do realize my speedloader case is on the "wrong" side but it threw my "balance" off when in the proper orientation, it still works for me the way it is which is the ultimate test.) At the time my normal duty-pistol was a Glock 22 but I've since gone to a Glock 17. I carry the 65 on my one day-shift per month usually or when the mood strikes me.

Here's a pic of it with the duty gear for smith_revolver_cop (being on a small department has a few perks):

Here it is after I Scotchbrited it:

I feel my 65-2 is one of my best purchases given the cost to value ratio.

Real good then,

I have a 3' and a 4" 65, and 2,3 and 4" 64s, and 3 3" M13s, one had been worked on by C&S and has a matte black finish that defies anything to scratch it. Those K frames just may be the best service revolvers ever. My 3' 65 is a 1980 "transition" gun, recessed but not pinned. I thought that was bad till I scored a Ladysmith barrel with lug. It is going on that 65(not my original thought-I got it here). Since it is not a pinned barrel it is much easier to put on the LS barrel. Hope to have it finished soon, and get a PC action job. I may take it to bed with me(or at least keep it handy). great Smiths all......

love my 13/65's(both 4 and 3").........and just noticed that in the Dark Knight, Dent after his face was all messed up and he went nuts......used a 3" 65, cool :)

Picked this up early last year. M65-5 from 1990. This is my daytime carry gun which runs with Buffalo Bore low recoil 158 gr Speer Gold dots (item 19E). I added Pachmayr Compac Professional grips which work awesome with this gun, much better than the original bananas.

The M65 3" is a primo carry revolver. Actually any K frame 3" is super. I have a 3"65 as well as 3"13s. A 65LS would be nice, but they are too pricey for me. If only I could find a 3" M10...... But dang they are scarce (at least at the moment). While dating myself, a 3"65 was my first new handgun I was issued by my PD. Initially we had to bring our own (which I actually preferred) but couldn't complain about the M65 except the barrel was apparently put on with a long cheater bar as the frame was split. But, what the heck, I found it before I shot it and they gave me a different new one. The Winchester .38 Spl 110+P+ was pretty impressive at the time as well. So include me in the fan list.

Here's another 65-5 with round butt target stocks. This is a real pleasure to shoot - and even gets to go out with me on occasion.

Regards,

Jerry

Add me to the list!

I purchased a 3" M65 several years ago when I first got my CCW. Managed to find an older shoulder holster and a strong side Desantis black hi-ride holster for it...and LOVED it! Seemed to be the perfect CCW rig. Then I caught the Glock bug and sold it to finance the purchase of a G19.
Two years ago, I decided I missed it too much and although it took the better part of a year to find another one, I did find a replacement. Still looking for a replacement shoulder holster for it, but this one will NOT leave my possession again.

Rigs are in short supply, but Ebay will have a shoulder system for it eventually, and until then I will make do with the belt system holster I didn't sell with the original M65. Great shooting, easy to conceal, and always goes BANG when you pull the trigger... what more could you want in a CCW gun?

I didn't realize until this thread showed up how I have ignored my M13. I know this is about the 65, but I have always chosen blue when I can get it.
Dinosaurs are like that. I have several stainless guns, but not an M65. They are hard to find around here.

My poor M13 seems to get put on the shelf and forgotten while I play or carry something bigger or smaller. J-frames and N-frames have their place, but I really think the K-frame is the real sweetheart of the S&W line. K-frames carry well, shoot well and unless you abuse them, will last several life times. Mine currently wears standard magnas unless I put on the packmyers (sp) for range or banging around in the woods. Six is better than 5 and K is lighter than N, so what could be better than a 13/65. I traded a M19 for the M13 nearly 25 years ago and have never been sorry. Never missed the adjustable sights.

Here is my Model 65-3. Gotta love a fixed sight 3 Inch no lock revolver! I have the original grips and stuff also but like the FG grips on it .

I have a M65 3" that is my carry gun and I just love it but I never really see too much written about them at all. I know some models are just not that popular but I am surprised that there is almost no talk about this gun. I think it is the perfect carry gun for me. The fixed sights, 3" barrel and round butt K frame just make it the perfect gun for me. Anyone else ever heard of this model? LOL.

You are right, you don't read much about 3" 13/65s. I did however read an article in the Dillion Blue Press a few years back which sounded alot like what I read here in this post. Don't remember who the author was. I decided then I should have one - no regrets. Mine is a 13 with bobbed hammer.

Yes, I have a couple. I rounded the butt on the 4"er to make it grip the same as the 3"er. I prefer the round butt.

I've got a 4" M65-5 which came to a little while back. This past year I caught the 65LS bug so I purchased a 3" underlugged LS barrel from Brownells. Hopefully it will go away for a barrel swap in the very near future.

I really like the gun, but unfortunately mine has one of the worst DA pulls of any of my K frames. That will be addressed during the barrel swap. I think that a 65LS look-alike with a smoothed action will make a fine carry piece.

here's a cell phone pic of a model 65 3" with a set of spegels boot grips:

IMG000511.jpg

background of the gun was that it was found in a s. cal gunstore on consignment about 3 years ago. the asking price was $350, but it was purchased for $300. it was purchased with the finish polished out and a trigger job. also, the front sight had been painted red-orange. what i have done is add the spegels and attempted to remove the front sight paint. i have fired approximately 100 rounds through it and it shoots great. no functioning problems of any kind.
