I have not found what I am after: polished bone grips with S&W medallions for model 39. I have beautiful smooth rosewood on there now and want to put those on a model 439 and ivory looking on the 39-2. I can't justify $350 for ivory panels so bone is the next thing, but I can't seem to find such an animal.
I have seen model 59 bone grips that are quite lovely on ebay but still coming up dry on the 39.
Any help would be great.
Best,
Steve

There are a couple of sellers there who seem to have a limitless supply of new S&W 39 grips in practically every material in known space. I did a quick search, like <60 seconds, and found somebody doing business as "tarnishqueen2" who has buffalo bone grips for a 1911 and for a S&W 59. If you contact her, she can probably locate the same for a 39. I have some reservations about some of these "custom made" grips for some of the more complex frames, but anybody with a drill press, a jigsaw, a wood rasp and a couple of sheets of sandpaper can make a presentable set of grips for a 39. They're just flat slabs with two holes. Al Bolduc at Gun Garage sells S&W medallions, or did last time I looked, so if you can't find bone grips with medallions, a drill press, the proper size spur or Forstner bit and two dabs of epoxy will fix that problem.
If you like the look of ivory, you might check with Bar S Grips, Bar S Grips Tru Ivory Grips Photo Gallery. Their flagship material is a proprietary man-made material they call "Tru Ivory." It's not the real thing, but it does a surprisingly good job of duplicating the look and feel, and you won't have half the alphabet picketing your house and the other half knocking with a warrant. Their website is pretty minimal and you'll need to call them if you want any detailed information. The number is one the page.

Thanks a bunch. I saw some of the Bar S grips in the flesh years ago and they looked like plastic, but this seems to be a different material now.
I will hit them up for sure. If I could find Ivory for it I would suck it up and squirrel away cash for it, but I would have more money in grips than gun at that point.

Tru Ivory

Back in the day, Brownell's carried both their grips and raw material intended for knife scales. They discontinued the scales, at least in their catalog, years ago, but I grabbed a set before they were totally sold out. It's somewhere in the stuff I moved this year, and it looks just barely big enough and thick enough for a set of grips of this type. I had intended to make a set of reproduction grips for a S&W Straightline that I acquired without the originals, and I may get around to that when I get settled in and set up my workshop. You might call Bar S and see if they still sell those direct. And yes, it's always easy to get nickel and dimed to death on these things. I've got a Steyr right now with an issue, and their website suggests that I send it back to them for a $149 "check and evaluation." Given that I paid less than $400 for the gun, I'm not thrilled, especially since the problem appears to be a part that should never wear out and probably costs under $5.

These guys might be able to do it for you:
Smith&Wesson 39 & 52 & 439 & 539 & 639 - KSD GRIPS
The linked page only shows wood grips for the 39, but if you browse around a bit you'll see that they have ivory micarta (or maybe it's just plastic...?) for other models sooo... maybe?

Check out their revolver grips while you're there... pretty cool stuff. They make grips for a LOT of oddball guns. Need panels for that Webley 1906? Look no further... Tokorev? Gotcha covered.
