i just bought a 629 classic w/ a 6.5" barrel and full under lug

unfortunately here in California we have to wait 10 days after purchasing to pick up our firearms (bull ****, i know)

while I'm waiting, id like to buy some wood grips for it, but want to be sure to buy the right ones..

i am wondering if anyone can tell me if this particular model has a round or square butt please...

Model 629 Classic | Smith & Wesson

I am partial to wood grips and usually ditch the rubber type grips on all my revolvers right away...(even the punishing 44 magnums like this one ;) )

thanks for your help

AFIK all the new ones are round butt.
I'm pretty sure S&W pretty much quit making square butt K, L, & N frames a few years ago, because it is easy to put grips on a round butt to make it "square", butt rounding one that is already square isn't easy at all.

My 626 classic is a round butt... with arthritis creeping into my hands, I've been forced to abandon wood grips as much as I like the looks over the "goodyears", and go with the Hogue Model 500 impact absorbing grips used on the big S&W 500.

As such, I have some Hogue wood grips languishing in my "grip draw" like these with no plans in sight... PM me if they interest you, will work something out between us Californians ;).

No doubt those are some beautiful grips and I VERY much appreciate your offer.

I have came across the perfect pair of grips from Altamont that are screaming my name and I just can't pass up.

once she gets out of jail, i'llpost some pics

i appreciate your guys' help!

I hope you like your Altamonts. They were HUGE for my average sized hands, I ended up with Ahrends on my RB 629. Though, someday I may too have to "downgrade" to X Frame rubber grips as no one can stave off Father Time forever.

They still make a few SB revolvers; this one was in the Classic line but is now listed in the medium frame revolver category:

I just purchased a S&W Performance Center 629 with 7 1/2 inch barrel - used to be called Light Hunter. It came with a set of very nice round butt wood grips and a rubber Hogue mono-grip. Just curious would a set of wood square butt grips provide me with better control when shooting than the factory round one? I have average size hands.

Thanks!

Ahrend's are designed for shooters with normal sized hands , I'm a grip junky and tried many brands, Ahrend's are properly designed for the shooter who can't palm a basketball.
They also make a round to square conversion grip for those who prefer square butts...like me. They are also affordable in the real wood of your choice (laminate....just another name for plywood).

I hate to resurrect an old thread, but I just bought a S&W 629-1 with a 3” barrel on an auction. I am hoping it is round butt. I want know until next week. I asked the guy selling it and his replay was, well the end of the barrel is square/flat.” Ugh. I believe some of the 629-1’s were square butt, but I am hoping it is round. I already have my grips ready if so.
