Dog's I have Known.....
Yeah... For those that don't know, that's a title from a comedy album by the Late and Great Jerry Clower! It seemed Fitting so I borrowed it for the title of this post!!
Now there's a Post called "Cougar hunting caliber conundrum" by 38splfan in which a member quoted a pic of a cougar that was cornered/Treed, by what looks like a Walker Dog along with a pair of Purty Bluetick's and he asked: "Somebody explain to me how that is "hunting", please." Which is why I'm starting this thread to avoid hijacking that thread...
First off, If you've never used dogs to hunt with, Please don't knock it 'till you've tried it!! Personally I've only used dogs to hunt deer so that's what I'll be talking about so here we go!
My first "Hunting" dog wasn't even mean't to be a hunter as he was a full blooded Bassett Hound that I bought in a pet store for $100.00... And that was gonna be his Job: to be a Pet!! And Boy was he Good at it!!!

I named him Roscoe and when he was almost 2 years old my nephew invited me to go deer hunting with him and a friend of his, He told me they had a pair of Beagles that were really good hunters and should see some deer that weekend! So I said yes and asked if I could take Roscoe? He asked if he hunted and I said No, not really but he would tree a cat in a heartbeat!!
He said the more the merrier so bring him and I did!
The next morning in Ocala near the Bombing Range we met up and my nephew's friend and I started off by walking the dogs through several different blocks of woods from daylight until about 11:00 that morning. By then Kenny, the guy I was walking with, was extremely upset that we hadn't jumped anything.. The reason for that was the dogs spent more time following us than actually hunting!!!
Well we watered the dogs, put them in the truck and was taking a short break before we went back at it when we heard some dogs coming at us Hard!!! We grabbed our guns just in time to watch 2 does and a yearling cross into the Bombing Range! We put the guns up and headed to where they crossed to head the dogs running the deer. We caught them and I found the track where the deer had crossed and marked the spot.. We checked the collars and called the owner to let him know we had his dogs and where so we waited for him to pick them up. We talked to the owner a few minutes and then Kenny asked if he minded us putting our dogs on the deer just to see if they would run. He looked at Kenny like he was crazy but said go ahead..
Now at this point it needs to be Known that this was my first time hunting with dogs and didn't really have a clue as how to get Roscoe to run those deer.. But I Did have a pretty good idea!!
Kenny and John, my nephew, turned to beagles out and they just started running up and down the side of the road just happy to be loose.. I toted Roscoe to where I marked the tracks coming outta the woods and started putting his nose in each track and walking him across the road while saying "Gittem!!" in a soft voice that got louder as we crossed the road. When I got to the far side of the road, Roscoe was getting excited, with that tail wagging so I hollered "GITTEMDANGIT!!!!" and turned him loose!! He went back and forth a few times, cut the trail, stood up on his hind legs, let out a Bellow and hit those woods on a MISSION!!!

The 2 beagles in the meantime hear Roscoe, saw him hit the woods and decided that was where the Fun was so all three dogs was lighting them up for about a half hour before they quit... 20 minute's after they quit running, Ol' Roscoe brought the other 2 dogs back out with him, within 10' of where he went in
, and then the Lovin' and Petting was started by me as I proceeded to tell Roscoe what a good dog he was!! The 2 beagles got attention also!!
The end of this particular story is that we got 4 more races up that day and Roscoe found/jumped all 4 with the beagles tagging along behind him every time!!

Now, You're gonna say "That's not a Sporting way to Hunt" and I'm gonna tell you that in all the years that I hunted Ocala, my group saw alot of deer but we never dropped one mainly due to the fact that the deer were so stretched out while running you couldn't see if it was a buck or a doe!!
To me, the Fun was in the Chase and the Fact that Ol' Roscoe had the Lead!!!!

RIP My Buddy......
