I Miss My Tree

When we built our house, we purchased our lot primarily on the basis of an enormous hickory tree growing near the street. It may have been the largest tree in our heavily treed neighborhood. It was at least 50 feet high. For 30 years it graced our front yard, but one night a huge lower limb came crashing down. The limb itself was easily the size of a full grown tree, and it blocked a lane of our street. Sadly, the falling limb ripped out nearly half of the trunk of the remaining tree, so the rest of our beautiful hickory tree had to be taken down. It was a sickening sight to watch the arborist's crew dismantle this once magnificent tree. I felt like I was having a beloved pet put down. Here are some photos that give you some perspective of what I've described. The last photo shows how much of the remaining tree towers over the broken limb.DSCN0612.jpegIMG_0360.jpegDSCN0614.jpeg

Am not a tree exspurt, but have a nack for growing locusts. Especially after their root system takes hold. A lot of people hate em but they grow quick, provide lots of shade, keep drunks out of the yard, very hard to blow over, flagrant/beautiful flowers when they bloom and are extremely hard to blow over.

In 2006 I was coming up to my second Christmas in my current house. To celebrate Christmas I bought a potted Norway spruce tree and decorated it for Christmas. After Christmas I took the tree out and planted it in the center of my back yard. I put the tree as far away from everything as I could because the literature on the pot said that a Norway spruce could grow to 40 feet tall. They weren't kidding. The tree is still growing and from the sidewalk across the street from my house I can see the top of this tree extending over the roof of my house.

I love my trees, even when they act up.... This one killed my Kia.

Its alright, I built my house in the woods. A hurricane came through about a half dozen years ago and dropped 60% of my trees, but my favorites survived. My plans are for my ashes to be scattered around my favorite Live Oak so that it can feed on me. (I hope that I don't kill it)

Back in the '90s I was living in a 3rd floor apartment near the Galleria area of Houston. I used to golf at Hermann Park Golf Course some and one day I picked up a acorn from a red oak on course. I planted that thing in a pot and put it out front of my apartment next to the door. The darn thing sprouted and made it through the first couple years just fine. When it got to be almost as tall as me I took it to my parents house, where I now live, and planted it next to the fence behind the garage. It is a bit over two stories tall now and provides shade for much of the back yard during the day. I hope it keeps going long after I am gone.

Ah, you just reminded me of something I left off my list under the heading "Trees are great, until:-".:)

You have a tree hard up against a fenceline and the roots start to disturb something in your neighbor's yard. Then there are the leaves, twigs etc that get dropped the other side of the fence.

The original owners of the house behind me cut off a couple of the main branches that were heading towards his two story house. Disappointing, but it was on his side. Wish he had talked to me about it though. The present owner really does not seem to care. I am not a fan of his crepe myrtles dumping on my side, but if he is willing to live and let live, so am I.
