This is to update my post about my first hunting trip in fifteen years. My friend Keith and I left out of NC on November 10th for Big Spring, TX and arrived on the 11th. We took 8 pointers and 1 setter and pulled a trailer with a Kawasaki Mule. Roughly 1500 mile, one way. We arrived at another friend's hunting camp, Mike, and stayed through the 17th. Keith and I hunted a ranch the first day and immediately a pair of pointers found a covey of blue quail. They are runners and we never got a shot at them. We later found a covey of bobs and killed one a piece. The weather quickly warmed up into the 80's and we had to quit as it was too hot for the dogs and was working me over pretty good as well. We walked a pretty good distance that morning.
The second day we found several coveys of blues but didn't kill anything. The third day we hunted a different ranch with Mike and his 85 year old friend WG. We hunted off Mike's Kubota side by side with seats up top of the dog box. The dogs found coveys of bobs and blues but we only killed one. We quit about noon due to the heat. The fourth day Keith and I hunted a ranch about an hour SW of the camp near Andrews TX. We could ride his Mule in the pastures on this ranch and let the dogs do their thing. We quickly moved a covey of blues and the dogs were able to find them after there first flight and give us a point. The dogs ended up finding 4 coveys that day and we killed 5 blues. The pastures at this ranch had better cover with just the right amount of short mesquite trees. We hunted the same ranch the last day and found 2 coveys but only killed one bird, a blue.
We had an initial report that there were plenty of birds there but numbers seemed to be not as good as first thought. Speculation was that a big rain a few weeks ago did something to hurt. None the less we had a great time and ate like kings every night at the camp. Sure thankful to my friend Keith for taking me out to the great state and to Mike for hosting us.
