I have a Mormon friend who would be considered a prepper. His church and Mormon's in general have supplies that would last for years. His wife came home yesterday from a ham radio class offered by the church. They are some prepared folks. Hope I didn't offend any moderators by mentioning a religion.

The Church encourages families to maintain a three month supply. Not necessarily for doomsday prepping, but as part of being responsible citizens.

The Feds would do well to subcontract aid relief operations to the LDS church. Their relief trucks were distributing aid after Katrina while the National Guard was still waiting for orders to truck supplies in.

Every time this topic comes up it reminds me of a discussion I had with some LDS co workers many, many years ago. They were talking about the practice of stoking a 2 year supply of food and I was asking questions; their boss told me about an unemployed friend of his that came to him to borrow money for groceries. He said he asked the friend "What about your two year supply?" the friend replied "Well, that's for hard times." To which the boss replied "What do you think these are?"

The lesson always stuck with me. We were never huge "preppers" but we made a habit of always throwing some extra rice or dried beans into the cart every time we went to Wal Mart. About three years ago my wife lost her job and while we were sorting out our finances and she was looking for work guess what we ate?

JMHO but Prepping is a long way from Doing. I.e. I wonder how many preppers would really have what it takes to execute the robbing, killing and abandonment of civilized life it might take to survive in a post apocalyptic world. Could they shoot a neighbor over a loaf of bread? Could they then leave that neighbors three yr old child to starve to death after they did? Could they really shut off all they have been taught about common decency and social responsibility?

Lets hope they never have to test themselves.


FWIW, I'm a BIG believer in keeping a couple of weeks worth of food, water and essential supplies on hand in case of a natural disaster. Beyond that, I don't like to think about it much.

On the TV show, Smith tests the suit by having Pedrini hit him with a rock, a pipe, an ax and a piece of timber. Finally, Smith has Pedrini shoot him in the chest point blank with a 12-gauge shotgun.


"Don't miss," he tells Pedrini.


"This doesn't feel right, Tyler," Pedrini says. "This might be a bad idea."


Smith survives the shooting but not without a major bruise.


Though the stunt was done for the TV show, it's not out of line with other tests he's done. He once had a friend shoot at him with rubber bullets while Smith ran through a field. Katie had to pull the bullets out of Smith's skin using pliers.

Me too brudda. We have nowhere to bug out to so we'll sit where we are. I can't store two years of supplies. I have a solid two weeks worth of provisions and we can protect it.

JMHO but Prepping is a long way from Doing. I.e. Tinder. We carry it on float trips. A small spark and it burns hot and for a good while. Even in a wet environment it burns hot and long enough to get wet sticks burning.

With a 110 cans of soup in the pantry, all you are going to prep is your liver, for a sodium overdose..

This whole show is done as a stunt. All Reality Shows are "stunts". No writers needed, no actors needed, it's cheap to produce and guaranteed to bring in the advertising dollar. Everybody'e tongues wagging about the latest train wreck.

Like all "reality based" programming, the premise is that some folks participate in (insert whatever here - storage auctions, junk dealing, beauty pageants, college student housing, survival training, etc. ). Now, let's find the biggest bunch of clowns available and tell them to play it up on the TV.

It's some sick stuff, actually.

People are spending hundreds of thousands of $$ on extremely elaborate prefab bunkers. It reminds me of the bomb shelters in the early 1960s. I guess a lot of people laughed at Noah, too.

The guy that makes the bunkers is learning as he goes. He installed a bunker for a guy and put the generator in a concrete block 'box'. Somebody came and tore up the blocks and stole his generator so he had to call the bunker guy back to help solve the situation. They put cameras in trees with remote controlled paintball guns to shoot at trespassers. He could monitor his remote bunker on the internet and if somebody was messing around his bunkers the paintball guns would shoot and he could shout over a speaker "You're trespassing! I'm going to call the police!"

Sounds like their med suppplies could use a lil touching up.

I wonder what these guys think it's like dropping into a disorganized third world country where you can't tell the good guys from the bad guys and most everybody is armed? Where you have to eat food that's unfamiliar and the water gives you the runs....where your money's no good cause nobody has nerve enough to take it.
They could run a practice drill pretty easy, all it takes is a bus ride.

Mind sharing with us where the bargain ammo is?

I think the 100 cans of soup a poster mentioned above is interesting. A while back I felt a little down. So I wanted a can of soup for supper. Not a biggie. So my wife took apart the pantry, looking. We both knew there was soup in there. And we were right. It was about 5 years old, in the very back . Plenty for an emergency. We'd eaten soup much more recently, but we consumed all of the stuff up front. I guess if we were in danger of starving, we'd end up dying from food poisoning instead. Or not.

Batteries are interesting. The last time I bought a bunch of 123s, was 10 years ago. I know that because they're expiring now. But they're still good. And about 5 years ago I found some at a gun show. They still had 10 years left on the "best by" date. I still use the expiring ones and they seem to work well. The standard size batteries don't last that long around here. We have grand kids with toys. I buy the cards of 48 at Sam's.

And I have MREs. My wife thought it was foolish and wanted nothing to do with it. Then she saw my grand kids reaction to "army food". Now its a big production. If they're here with us, the one when asks always answers "Army food". Its like Christmas, looking at all the goodies. Then sharing it with everyone. She thought it was foolish for me to buy a case. We're down to a couple awful selections (veggie). So I did the logical thing (to me). I found a deal on another case for $50 and bought it. I waited till she was busy to smuggle it in. But it wasn't necessary. She now agrees its an easy way to feed a finicky eater. He actually wants it. The only thing to watch are the dates.

On the ammo--sure thing but I dunno if it helps because--I got them at WM about 14 years ago. ;-))

It was me who mentioned the soup. Also, you can eat soup in cans long since expired. I had some perfectly good soup I got from my Grandmothers pantry--who passed away in 1979. I cleaned out her pantry circa 1994. I threw out any cans with signs of rust-other corrosion or leaking (none had leaked) but several had some spots of rust on them. There were about 150 good cans of soup--we ate them all, nobody got sick or "expired." I have a bad stomach and cant take a lot of punishment--If I got food poisoning again? id either die from it or wish I had died.

Dan had been buying batteries for a few years before Y 2 K, and had all his batteries packed in huge grey rubber maid bins. He had 7-8 or the larger ones completely full of only batteries. He had about the same amount or so--full of food, water, band-aids etc, and still had ay least another dozen large bins full of canned goods stored at his brothers home. Im supposing they did eat the canned goods? but the other stuff was eventually tossed.

Heh heh, not to worry. It'll easily take me multiple years to use it all. I got them when WM had a huge sale on them earlier this year. Most are cream of potato, or cream of chicken--which I use making certain meals like: baked chicken over a bed of rice-etc. The cream of chicken makes for a good gravy for the chicken. The cream of potato soup can be used too for that purpose but isnt near as good as the chicken is. I have probably 6 cans or more of chicken for every can of potato.

In Dans case, he was then making $6 bucks an hour. He spent every available Dollar on that stuff for years with not much of a net positive note.

He may not be any more paranoid than some on this forum who feel the need to have a loaded gun in every room of their home, carry two or three handguns at all times, or who have holsters that they wear when sleeping.

I have four handguns scatered around the house. I like having one within reach when I'm home, and I don't like the idea of wearing one. Got several thousand rounds of ammo tooo; but it's cast bullet reloads, mostly used for plinking and other fun.

I've stockpiled some water, a real necessity in the desert, but not much food.

Haven't tried the cotton balls and vaseline trick. A few years ago I pulled down some 303 ammunition; I saved the cordite powder for starting fires, and I have a couple of those fire starting bricquettes to keep the fire going.

Only 100 cans of soup? I got that beat. but of course it was all Preparations for hurricane season. I do it every year. I can stay with ya on the ammo too.

And I get to spend the next year eatin' soup and beanie weenie and Dinty Moore and...well you see what I mean. If every thing falls right the SHTF will happen just after I've stocked up for hurricane season. But the way my luck runs It'll pro'lly happen the day before I was gonna go get all that stuff.
