Doris Day just died at age 97. She was one of the prettiest and most wholesome movie stars ever. She was the classic "girl next door."

May she ever rest in peace. She will be missed.

Here's a picture of her at 3 of her stages in life.

She is an icon here with a street named for her downtown. She was born 3 miles from where I live.

She got her start with WLW radio and Les Brown was impressed enough to hire her. She recorded his "Sentimental Journey" and it became the unofficial homecoming song for WWII and put her on the global map.

My dad, being close in age to her, was always enamored of her. His favorite song of hers was "Secret Love."

Sadly, shortly after her death announcement, heartless trolls sullied her Wikipedia page with (since cleaned up) ugliness.

She was grace personified.

Doris Day was pretty much wholesomeness personified. She was also almost too pretty. Not glamourous-pretty, but pretty in that All-American-Girl way in real life and in films. Unlike women like Sophia Loren or Jayne Mansfield, who seemed unobtainable, Doris Day could've been any guy's girl-next-door-sweetheart.

In 1978, she founded the Doris Day Animal Foundation. Over forty years later, it's become one of the largest animal rescue organizations in the country, and has many offshoots all over this country. Once she stopped making films, she devoted the rest of her life to animal welfare and rescue. There was no other interest that consumed her as much as her love for animals.

"I have found that when you are deeply troubled, there are things you get from the silent devoted companionship of a dog that you can get from no other source."

- Doris Day

That quote rings so true for me, it's almost scary.

Rest In Peace, Doris Day. A lot of dogs and other animals will be so happy to see you again.

I'll have to tell my mom gently. She will be crushed. We crossed paths with her some 20+ years ago (I used to be able to take mom on business trips whenever the company allowed better halves to be included- no wife here). I thought my mom was going to collapse from the excitement, but she composed herself and had a great 15 minute talk about growing up during WWII in the lobby.

She was a great Lady and as others have said, the wholesome girl next door type that I had a crush on from the first time I ever saw her.

Truly one of a kind, and a classy lady. Audrey Hepburn is the only other actress that was anywhere in the same league.

I think I’ll watch Doris Day in “Calamity Jane” tonight. Wonderful movie!

I had the pleasure of escorting her and a small entourage to their rooms after performing at one of our now defunct high end hotels on the beach in 1983. When I greeted her she placed her arm around mine and stated, " they sent a handsome and very large Policeman to escort me to my room ",. As a young man of 22 I found her not only beautiful on the outside but on the inside as well. Her eyesight may have ben off but she was lovely.
