I have two Model of 1905 4th changes. I've been told the earlier SN 260742 was shipped in 1920, but that the later SN 294976 was shipped earlier in 1919. Does this sound right?

Yet. S&W did not sip in serial number sequence.

If you received the dates from Roy Jinks or the SWHF they are accurate and just out of order. If you asked about them as a general inquiry here or elsewhere, someone may have provided a guess or had a close SN with a date, which may not be accurate.

Neither one sounds right unless they were both late shippers, one very late. As Alan says, if these years didn’t come from Roy, I would discount them.

Extrapolating from known shipped serials, the 260- is likely 1916, while the 294- could have shipped anytime between late 1917 and 1919; the disruption due to the war really makes accurate guesses difficult.
