Double action only revolver ?

I just recieved a S&W in 455 that was sold to Canada made about 1915. It operates only in double action. Is it possible that this is how it was shipped or did I buy a screwed up gun? I know some Webleys were DAO and I just want to make sure before I send a note to the seller. TIA...Joe

I would guess that either someone modified it, or it has something broken internally. I do not think it was shipped that way

I agree - I'm not aware of any that were shipped that way, and I believe
that none were shipped that way.

You will find the problem right away if you remove the sideplate. More than
likely, the sear has been removed from the hammer. Its also possible that
the sear spring is broken, and the sear has fallen down onto the hammer,
in a position where the trigger can't engage it.

If the sear is missing, its possible that someone was trying to work on the
action, and messed up the sear. Realizing that, they just removed it, figuring
they could always shoot it single-action anyway.

Mike; I think he is talking Apples and you're giving him Oranges. What the problem will be is the Single Action Sear Notch has been worn out or the end of the Trigger Nose has become worn and will not hold in the Sear Notch. Neither is too uncommon in these older guns that were fired Single Action a great deal more than Double Action. The only trouble is finding a set of part to replace them with that aren't also worn out! Mike
