Double feed with new Shield

I took my new Shield 9mm to the range and around on the 130th round I had a double feed. One round was sticking up with the primer pointing upward. The magazine wouldn't drop so I pulled the slide back, and found the next round was slightly pushed forward in the magazine. The failed round was 115 grain Winchester white box. I also fired about 80 rounds of Federal Tactical HST 124 grain with no failures. I have fired around 130 more rounds of various 115 grain and 124 grain ammo since then without any further failures. What would cause this problem? I'm leaning towards either ammo problem, break in issue, or user error due to me being new to the thin Shield, and having not shot a pistol in over a year. Again, I'm now over 250 rounds and my failed round was around 130th round. I was hesitant to carry it until I fired about 70 rounds today, and it ran flawles with amazing accuracy. Any suggestions is appreciated.

Could be anyting but you did put through a lot of rounds after that one issue so i don't think I would wory about it.. Think about your grip more evey time your shooting.. Simply a lose hold on the gun could cause the issue you had.. Work on hold and grip and a little control of recoil. Have someone help you with that that knows and find something that works for you. It's easer to learn something the right way the first time then have to relearn a bad habit.. Be safe! George

White box ammo.

I hate to say it, but I have joined the ranks of the haters. I had no problems with it for years in my first M&P9. But I got a more recent model last spring (April 2012), and started having problems.

I had read hater reports of the WW ammo being bad, but I had used several hundred rounds through my first M&P9 (2007 manufacture) and M&P9c without a hitch, but in the 2012 model, started having issues with FTE's and associated jams as described by the OP. I do not believe it to be any sort of magazine issue, because I switch out all of the original mags, as well as the extra mags I have purchased over the years (nine in all) between the three guns, and only have the problems with the 2012 gun.

I also only seem to have an issue with it during 3gun matches wher I have loaded to the full 17 round capacity, and the FTE occurs at or after the fifteenth round. I have not had an issue in USPSA or IDPA, but I shoot production there, and only load to ten rounds there. Nor have I had issues at the range, but that is always limited to slow fire by range rules.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I didn't want you guys to think that I was a new member that just posted without researching first.

I'm a longtime Walther guy that less than a month ago, bought my first S&W, a no safety Shield in 9mm. Great gun, but here's a copy of the e-mail I just sent Customer Service. I'll report back how they handle it if you're interested.

I know my e-mail seems a bit elementary and possibly anal, but I'm a lawyer and have a tendency to over egg the pudding . . .

I purchased the above referenced Shield on June 24, 2014 from a dealer in Southeastern Michigan.

I shot the pistol right out of the box on Sunday, July 6th (50 rounds of factory Federal 115gr FMJ ammo) with no issues.

Yesterday, Monday, July 7th, I again shot the pistol (100 rounds of factory Fiocchi 115gr FMJ ammo), and had two Type III (double feed) malfunctions, after about 50 rounds (so roughly 100 rounds into the gun’s life). The malfunctions were not sequential.

Last night, thinking that perhaps the malfunctions were because I neglected to wipe off any abundance of oil that the pistol may have been packed with at the factory, and that perhaps that and grime contributed to the double feeds, I field stripped the Shield to clean it. It was not particularly oily or dirty, but I did notice that the thin disc at the end of the recoil spring (see attached photo – “swshield2”) was bent.

So my questions are as follows:

1) Can you send me a new spring?
2) Could this faulty spring have led to the double feeds?
3) If not, what might the usual culprit be that perhaps I can check?
4) Is the pistol safe to shoot between now and until a new spring arrives?

Sorry, hard to tell just what's wrong with your gun but if you can get through 15 round and then start having issues.. It tells me two thing. ! it's the mags.. I know you ruled them out so I will to and go to #2 for me it's all about the chamber and maybe heat after the 15 rounds.. Me I would brush it well in and out and round and round let it soak over night with a patch of bore cleaner on the brush in the chamber.. Ok now I would have a darn good look at the chamber.. I would polish it this will help.. Change you gun lube try the old try and true good old hoppes gun oil and bore cleaner for that matter.. Newer lube can sink into the metal as they should when heated this is fine and is what they should do but I have seen many people that shoot fast and heat up the chamber so much that that new lube will burn into the metal and make the chamber very tight if the chamber was built tight already.. Metal will look darker or even black depending on how bad it's burned into the metal.. Very hard to get it out.. reg. gun oil will work well and is all you need and will not burn into the metal it can't it's markup is just to big it will burn on but mostly burn off.. Give this a try.. Could also be the extractor but i think if it can pull 15 rounds without issues there is more to it all.. I see this all the time with some of the new lubes and fast shooters.. George

I had the exact problem with the recoil spring end disc being bent. Had to really look at it to see if it was suppose to be like that. I noticed that as I field stripped the gun prior to shooting. And my Shield was almost dry, not much oil at all. Took some needle nose pliers and straighten disc out and lubed the gun up some. Put 150 rounds through it a week ago with no problems at all. Field stripped it again and disc looked fine. May have been a assembly deal at the factory. So far, no harm done.

I might just do that, as according to S&W, it may take 5 days to get to my e-mail.

I am confused, you claim that WWB is bad ammo but then state that it runs fine except in the one gun.

How is that an Ammo issue?

I noticed you had no trouble with the federal Ammo. The reason i bring this up is i had a new box of fiocchi 115 grain fmj, that i had stove pipes with on three different guns. I talked to store clerk and was told other people were having the same problem. Not saying that is your problem. Something to consider.

XP100, you may be on to something. I ran a bunch of Fiocchi 9 through my Walther without issue, but that ammo was purchased about three years ago. This recent batch was purchased the same day that I shot.
