driving prices

What is driving the model 10s and 64s up in increasingly higher prices. I mean 700 dollars, thats 19 and 66 area.

I haven't seen any 10s/64's sell in that area but I have seen a few pristeen specimens listed near that mark. I will say they are on the rise though.
My educated guess is that these guns used to be considered basik shooters and as such, many got well used/abused along the way. That makes cleaner/ collectible quality ones all the rarer (and more valuable as such.) Like ANYTHING out of production, clean specimens can command higher prices.

FWIW, I've bought and sold a good dozen model 10's and 64's during my collecting days some 10 years back. I never paid/asked more than $350 back then. (Even bought 18, model 64 LE turn in's at less than $200 each at one point.)
More recently, I purchased this unfired mod 10 for $550. It hurt a bit but I knew I'd likely never find another like it.

'm not one of the folks who say that something x years old is somehow better; by and large guns today function better than ever. However, things like a polished blue finish that used to be common are very expensive today due to labor costs.

I like that workmen receive a fair wage for labor, but manufacturers can't make a product that consumers will pay for with the hand work that used to be common. Everything in life has the old yin and yang, I reckon.

I've been looking at 1911's, and to get one blued with polished flats adds about $400.00 to the price. Makes an old model 10 look pretty good.

SE Pa those are around $350 - $400. Maybe supply/demand in your area?

One LGS here has a bunch of 10-5 standard barrels for $280. They are in used condition but it's all holster wear

There are newer/younger people discovering and getting interested in S&W revolver shooting and collecting. What is the most common models that they can find? M10's and M64's. This is where people are entering our hobby. Clean common guns with or with out box and docs are getting more scarce everyday as examples are bought and they enter someone's collection, the price will rise on those left in the market. I haven't seen a $700 M10 or a M64 unless it is a pristine 3" gun either.

I don't think it's anyone discovering anything although that probably adds to it. If anything I think it's just trickle down effect. As other revolvers become too expensive people gravitate towards the cheaper ones. If I can't afford to collect X I'll get Y

Aside from less common variations, I can't say I've seen a lot of model 10s or 64s sell at $700 plus. Perhaps a NIB 3" 64 with great photos and marketing online .

WE are driving up prices. Every time I come on this forum I read about how fantastic those old guns are and want one.

The more popular Glocks and the like become, the more desirable old metal guns become to a sub-sub set of the gun people.

The only specimens I’ve seen in that ballpark are mint 3”, one ANIB. There’s still LEO trade-ins in the low 300s.

Unless you’re talking about what’s on dealers shelves in my neck of the woods. I seldom bother looking anymore.
