I just found out there is a special place for folks who consistently drive slow in the fast lane.

I've heard people say "it's a free country, I can drive in whatever lane I want to." Well, my reply is just because you have the right to do something doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

Most states have laws that the left lane is for passing only.

The right lane is for those exiting and entering the freeway, and slow traffic. "Slow" does not mean "slower than me". It is generally accepted that it means slower than 10 miles per hour under the speed limit.

The center lane is for "normal traffic" faster than the speed limit - 10 mph.

The left lane is for passing only.

Note the speed limit is a maximum, not a minimum. Many seem to think if you're doing the speed limit -5 mph you're "slow traffic". That's not so.

Where I live about half the traffic is doing 10 mph over the speed limit and screaming at all those doing the speed limit.

Edit:

Oh, look: New law could mean trouble for left lane drivers

florida you can be ticketed for impeding the flow of traffic.
snowbirds from Canada get in the fast lane and sit there at
70mph and won't move over. on the back county roads their even worse.
thankfully snowbird season is just about over.

Coffeemug , you can't just blame it on the Canadians . I think after a certain age you should have your license renewed every 2 years , and you have to go in to do it . I'm sure all of us will be there sooner or later , so we need to be a little understanding . This coming from someone whose wife drives now , she says my driving is too aggressive .

I do appreciate your post there Puller , I really do . Maybe we can have it posted in every DL office in the country .

Back when I was a state cop and the national speed limit was 55, there were some troopers who liked to get in the left lane and do 55, waiting for that one brave soul to pass on the right, while backing up traffic a half a mile behind him. A very questionable practice.

After several serious accidents were traced back to this behaviour, it was officially banned.

At any reasonable speed, flowing traffic is always safer than stop and go traffic.

A favorite thing done by the CHP in the sacramento areas.......
Vacaville to Sac was a real bummer sometimes.

I got hung out in the left lane after attempting to pass a couple of cars. You know how it goes. Go to pass someone and they speed up. I'm doing the speed limit (75mph) and notice that there are two LEO on motorcycles right behind me. I could barely see them over the tailgate of my truck. They must have been drafting off the back of my truck. Not sure what I should do I decided to put on my turn signal and hit the gas. I got back in the right lane and they passed me without even a glance.

There was a Highway Patrolman doing 5 mph below in the left lane and nobody would pass him. I finally got behind him and blew the horn. He moved over, I passed and he pulled me over and wrote a ticket for 15 over the speed limit. I had to get a lawyer but I beat the ticket. Larry

Just think of all the lives it would save if you could get off at your exit from either the right lane or left lane. People wouldn't be swerving across 2 or 3 lanes at the last moment causing accidents.

I'm content to hang out in the middle lane.

Stuff like this doesn't bother us. We swim with the rest of the salmon and leave early enough that we still get where we're going and arrive there without knots in our stomachs or spiked blood pressure.

No negative waves for us, Moriarty.😎

PS: here, the left lane is for passing but it is rarely enforced as almost everyone drives at or slightly over the limit.

Oh, throw some Foghat "Slow Ride" on the playlist.
