Dry firing Mod 41 & 22A

Any harm in dry firing either the Model 41 or the 22A?

Welcome! With nearly all rimfire guns the firing pin will contact the edge of the chamber without a round or snap cap/empty in place. You can see the dents afterward.

Snap caps are a good option as jackrabbit mentioned, also an empty .22 case with an undented area where the firing pin will strike. You can usually get 6-8 uses each.

I don't dry fire often with my 41 ( I do with my Walther GSP), but when I do I use a plastic drywall anchor in the chamber. My LHS (local hardware store) sells them individually or in a box of 100. The 100 count box retails for $5.49. They are made by Hillman, but others should work. I use the yellow ones, which I think are for a number 6 to 8 screw. I don't remember who to give the credit to for this idea. I gave a few to my LGS to try, and they bought a box of 100 so they could give out a few with each .22 rimfire sold.

The manual says that dry fire w/o caps is a no-no.

The other side of the OP's question: Is it hard on a 41's hammer spring to leave it cocked all the time in lieu of dry-firing?

The only time you want to dry fire any 22 cal gun is when you wish to do damage to it. I don't believe I have ever met any owner who has this wish as yet. Definitely a NO-NO to do.
