dry firing the M&P 22

Is it ok to dry fire the M&P 22. I read the manual but it does not say or I missed it.

as a general rule do not dry fire rimfire firearms. You can use snap caps - I dont know the size but one size of plastic drywall anchor supposedly is just the right size & cheap

It says in the instruction manual not to dry fire the M&P22. Ruger rimfires have a crossbolt to prevent the firing pin from hitting the chamber, but several other brands do not.

And where did these words of wisdom come from?The only handguns recommended not to dry fire are rim fires.Centerfires are ok to dry fire.It is preferable to use snap caps.

Most guns can be dry fired accept 22`'s. Since 22 firing pins are hitting the edge of the cartridge, if there is no cartridge it will hit the face and damage it, if it is done enough one could have a problem with the bullets fitting into the chamber.

In fact it's advantageous to dry fire, I had a GP100 357 that I dry fired 2000 times over a few days to develop my trigger, it worked perfect, I ended up with a fine trigger. Jim

Keep in mind that there is a shoulder on the firing pin that when dry fired, strikes the front of the slide, where the firing pin goes through the hole. In time, the firing pin could work harden and break. This is could be one of the reasons S&W changed from a carbon steel firing pin, to a stainless one. The carbon steel ones had a high incidence of breaking.
Do a Google search on all the people that have broken a firing pin after a lot of dry firing. There's a lot of them. Too many to be a coincidence.

You can dry fire you center fire all day long and do no damage, but if you cock your rim fire and need to fire it pull the bolt or slide back slightly and pull the trigger to keep the firing pin from hitting the side of the chamber.

That's ridiculous.

Dry firing is a very important component of a comprehensive training program.

Striker fired weapons can be dry fired endlessly without harm.

No rimfire guns should be dry fired without snap caps, but striker fired guns are no problem....
