the book says not to dry fire the rifle (understandably) but how do you release the firing pin after you have cocked it and the gun is empty ? or do you just leave it cocked but in "safe" mode ?

You can just leave it charged, on Safe. Or put a spent casing or a snapcap in the chamber and pull the trigger.

Or pull the top pin on Lower open up and hold the hammer and realease it (pull trigger) and un-cock it by Hand....

Dry firing will not damage the 15-22! There must be a half-dozen threads on the subject. Do a search and read them.
FWIW, mine has been dry-fired more times than I can count, with no ill effects.

IF your worried about it....Pull back on the charging handle a tad to get the bolt face away from the barrel and pull the trigger. Release charging handle and your done.

What the previous 2 posters said. I just pull the trigger myself and I also have done a lot of dry firing.

No, I was asking why he would drop the hammer before putting his rifle away.
I hope the "relieve spring tension" myth has been put to bed by now.
Why don't you all do what I do. Pull the charging handle almost all the way back but not quite and pull the trigger, then slowly slide the charging handle back. This de cocks the hammer. Simple! . Why leave the hammer spring under tension when it is this easy

Because it makes absolutely NO difference which way the rifle is stored - cocked or uncocked. There is zero effect upon the hammer spring, either way.
