Most recently I've given quite a bit of thought on how DD will end.

My wife and I watch the show but are getting weary of the overt commercialism, walk into a convenience store and there is a giant card board cut out full of DD Sun Glasses, CD's, hats and other stuff. Walk into a Wally world or big box sporting shop and it is non stop Duck calls, DD rubber boots, hats, beards, sunglasses, Cd's and stuffed pillows. Chia beards on TV?????? Wow.

I thought overselling the brand would kill them.

Again we see that one's personal opinion uttered aloud can kill the golden goose or cook yours.

I have always felt that there is a very fine line between dislike and hate. It is very easy to cross. Folks forget that you look both ways before entering an intersection. It is applicable to think twice before entering your mouth into the intersection.

Many years ago my son had to have a Star Wars Sleeping bag for sleep overs with his little friends, my daughters had to have the Back Street Boys sleeping bags. A few years after that you could buy nice little sleeping bags for 50 cents or a buck at yard sales. I bought them, washed them and used them for pads in dog kennels, a pad next to my chair for them. My old Lab could sleep like a Jedi next to me. Soon my Lab will be sleeping on DD fuzzy beards and duck bags dreaming of the next mallard.

They traded business longevity for quick money. From what I've gathered, Duck Commander went from selling 60K duck calls per year to close to a million once the show took off. The vast majority of those were obviously purchased as novelty items and will eventually return to the market. The question becomes, how will Duck Commander cope with hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of their duck calls hitting eBay and Odd Lot/Dollar stores for pennies once the show is old news and the novelty wears off? The answer is they won't.

Now, it's always possible they'll plow the money they're making now into something profitable in the future, but I get the feeling people who go for the quick cash like this tend not to think that way.

I wonder more about how that show got started than how it will end. No offense to any of it's fans, I've tried and tried to like it, many of my friends and family members love it, but I just don't get it.

Maybe it should come with a laugh track  :D

It is a very interesting story. They did a Duck hunting show on one of the hunting networks, Duck Commander. The different personalities and craziness led to a spin off, Duck Dynasty.

I went to youtube and watched some Duck Commander clips, you could see the humor and interactions that were easily rolled into the spinoff.

We did not watch either but many folks kept asking us or telling us about it. We watched Duck Dynasty and it was pretty funny, sort of reminds one of I love Lucy, homey honest fun with a fall guy or two and a crotchety uncle.

Phil actually is not on the show a lot, it is the interactions between the ineffective DD Corp CEO oldest son Willy, Uncle Si and Willy's brothers that fills most episodes.

I hate the over the top commercialism but do enjoy the show. And that's a fact Jack.

I enjoy the show. I know the situations are scripted. I don't enjoy it as much as I use to, but it's still better than most the other shows on TV right now. Simply put, it's good fun.

That said, A&E should be allowed to do whatever they want, just like any other business. I don't think he should have been "fired". He worded his statement in a non-disrespectful manner. I also don't think other people should be fired when they respectfully disagree with the 2nd amendment. Now if Phil Robertson said, "F*gs are evil and deserve to die," then yes, I don't blame anybody for firing him, even if he was practicing his 1st amendment rights. I would have the same feelings if someone said, "All gun owners deserve to have their first born children shot to death."

My point is no matter the topic of conversation, people shouldn't be punished for practicing their 1st amendment rights as long as it isn't offensively worded. I see on a lot of gun forums, members calling for other people to be fired because they hate guns, but they support incidents like what happened to Phil. This is similar to the pot calling the kettle black. That's my 2 cents on this situation.

"Reality" starts with a premise: A small family business catches the public fancy and now they have money.

The "Reality Show" goes more like this: 21st Century Beverly Hillbillies acting out every Appalachian stereotype on a weekly basis.

They're all millionaires, laughing all the way to the bank. The marketing model looks to be much the same as Orange County Choppers was several years ago. They'll wring it out for every cent they can and put that logo on anything and everything that holds ink, takes thread, or can be stapled, glued or molded.

To A&E, and to the DD Brand, it's all about the Benjamins. Certainly, one of their actors has the same right as any citizen to speak his mind. But the consequences of those words will be measured in decimal places.

my guess is that phil is not losing any sleep over this. have you guys ever heard of a professional QB named Terry Bradshaw? i'd bet my paycheck most of you have. phil was the starter at Louisiana Tech when Bradshaw was there. Bradshaw got the starter position when Phil quit because it interfered with his duck hunting.

as far as the commercialism...the robertson's own none of that except duck commander and buck commander. A&E owns the duck dynasty brand and they are the ones that have commercialized the brand. i'm not saying that phil and the family don't profit from it, but i'm sure it's not as much as we would like to think...

if i remember correctly, the ones with more air time get less than 50 grand a show...for as popular as the show is, that is not very much compared to other shows. still too much for what they do though.

I think he was baited. But I don't know why anyone is offended they have the same right to beleave and say what they want. After all he was asked a question and he gave an honest answer no BS no PC just an answer.

I've got a ton of respect for the Robertsons and I agree with Phil 100% about his sexual proclivities. They don't need A&E but they are committed Christians and are using the DD platform to spread the gospel of Jesus. God wont be mocked, bet your life on it.
