Has anyone on this forum ever had duct cleaning work done? Does it work? Is it a waste of money? Anyone in the business? All input welcome. No wise quacks please.

Unless you have a mold problem, I think it's a waste of time. If you have a mold problem-cleaning ain't gonna do it anyway
Pull the register and look inside with a mechanics/dental mirror. I will be surprised if there is an 1/8" of dust.
Had it done to this 30-year old house when we bought it. There was a great deal of old construction debris, dust and other yecch sucked out, including some '70's-era soda cans!
If you opt to have it done, select a company that starts at the furnace and works their way out from there. Just sucking out the duct work is only part of the job.

It's a BIG scam by lots of fly by night companies here in Florida. Some are legit but most are fraud. There was a big write up in our local paper the other day.
There is a National association that the good guys belong to, if you hire someone be sure they are part of it.
To me it's right up there with the $29.99 A/C "clean and check"
Or carpet cleaning $4.95 per room.

You won't see a lot of dust in your supply registers. Pull off a return grill and you will be surprised how much stuff has accumulated over the years.

Well there ya go-no duct cleaning for me. BUt I already knew that.
Isn't it great that an agency of the government provides all of this great information for free-at no cost to us.

I think it's worthwhile, but not nearly as often as is usually recommended. Unless your house is unusually dusty, once every decade should be fine. As with anything, do your homework and use a reputable local contractor who's been in the business several years or more.

Use good filters in your furnance/AC and changed them once a month, you shouldn't have anything in your ducts unless some bubba construction company put them in to start with, as some one wrote earlier in the thread.

Doesn't seem realistic.
All ducts I've ever seen quack- a lot. Some whistle also, but they quack after they land.
I clean my own ducts. It doesn't take long if you just fillet the breast. The rest is hardly worth a lot of trouble.

3 1/2 magnum and a really tight choke the ducts will clean themselves.
