OK...how does S&W determine "J,K,L,N frames ....where is A,B,C,D,E..ect, where are the rest of the letters of the alphabet

what are the changers ?? other then CAL.

I have no idea. Probably the same way Colt picked P, D, etc. The only one that makes any sense is Colts .41 frame, used with the Python. Because up till that point the largest cal. used in that frame size was the .41 Colt.

S&W's systim does make some sense. I real small, j small, k a little bigger, L bigger yet, But then you get 'M' the smallest. Who knows?

My system:

J = Just enough
K = Kinda big
L = Larger still
N = No bigger necessary

There was also the "Pre J" frame called the I frame. They made the I frame bigger and better to make the caliber change from 32 to 38 and called it a J frame.

Actually to upgrade from .38 S&W to the longer .38 spl. they lenghtened the I frame's cylinder window. At least advancing one alphabet letter made some sense in this case.

I'm not sure where all the letters are but the ones I know of from samll to large are the;

M frame
I frame
J frame
K frame
L Frame
N frame
X frame
