I'm the proud owner of a new 686 5" Pro Series. It comes with moon clips. I've only ever used speed loaders. When not using the moon clips, the cartridge rim is only in contact with a small portion of the cylinder. It's OK to load & shoot without the moon clips, right?

I don't know if the 686 has the same issues with light strikes when used without the moon clips, but I suggest that you shoot enough ammo through it without them to be sure that it is reliable. Mine (627 Pro) suffered several failures to fire on it's first outing with two brands of ammo.

Those are nice looking guns, congrats.

It is designed to function with or without moonclips so it's perfectly safe and acceptable to not use them. As far asthe light primer strike issue that RonS is having could have to do with S&Ws plague of primers that are right on the border of being to short which is easily remedied with an extended pin from cylinder and slide.
