Looking for a little information gentlemen. While I typically pack my 25-13 Mountain Gun in the woods I occasionally find myself wanting or needing (for concealment purposes) to carry a 1911 while roaming the great outdoors. Conventional defensive ammo is fine for all threats one might encounter around here accept black bears. Though an encounter is exceedingly unlikely, I do like having all my bases covered. Buffalo bore makes a couple of loads that fit this bill, but their prices at over $1 a round are rediculous.

In short I'm looking to launch a 230g FMJ-FN or TC at around 950fps. Anyone have a pet load in this area or can point me in the direction of some data?

Hornady lists a standard pressure load of 8.7g HS-6 under their 230 FMJ-FN giving 900fps. Hodgdon on the other hand list 9.0g of HS-6 pushing the same bullet to over 980 fps as a .45 Super load. Pretty big discrepancy...

Thanks for any help!

I'll be needn that for squirrels and such.
there was a little something I cooked up for bear defense a long time ago.
first, you get a few pounds of habanero peppers, rubber gloves, and a good sharp knife.
cut em open and extract that spongy membrane the seeds are attached to. and allow this to sun dry.
Dont try to help it along in the oven or microwave ... im serious.
once dry a mortar and pestal will make quick work of turning it in to devil dust.
fill any hollow point you like, compress and seal with artists acrylic paint.
if it could get through the fur, a 25 auto could change the mind of just about any beast. I'd set the low limit at 380 auto to ensure the point gets across properly

You might try 13.0 gr of 2400 and see how close that is to where you want to be. I didn't use any 230 gr bullets when I was shooting that load out of a M1917. The bullets and how deep they seat will affect the velocity to a great degree.

BTW, it should be in the neighborhood of a HS-6 load with less than 9.0 gr.

In a 5" 1911, you can get to 950fps w/ several powder & a 230grLTC. BlueDot, HS6, PP, LOngshot, probably AA#7 too, maybe even Unique. Yes it will be a +P load, but I think the BB load is too.

Checking some notes. My heavy 45ACP loads are saved for my M625JM so this may not be much help but............

One load I have noted is with an H&G #502, 240gr LSWC of the Elmer design for the 45AR. 14gr 2400 for 1014fps AVG from the 4" tube.
That same bullet with a Speer #8 load for the 45AR and SR4756 gives me right at 1100fps.

I chose the latter. Either will work in a revolver. Not sure about a 1911. Not without a heavier spring! ;)

I just finished a few 45 loads and ran them over the chrono a couple days ago. My 5" 625 clocked about 50 fps slower than my 5" Springfield 1911. All of the fo1lowing is from the 1911

230 FMJ - OEM PMP-DNL brand - 930 fps (other factory is 850)
230 XTP - 8.4 AA-5 oal=1.21"-937 fps
230 XTP - 7.1 N-350 @ 1.21" = 920 fps

As always - start lower and work up looking for pressure - these are hot loads IMO
