625 vs 45 LC Mnt Gun?

The moonclips were an error in packing. BTW, not to rain on the .45 ACP conversion of a .45 Colt parade, but the vestige of the original cylinder's length, left as an outter ring to catch the .45 Colt rim, presents a problem. It prevents loading .45 Auto Rims! Of course, a 625JM in.45 ACP is flat - and the .45 AR's fit fine.

Don't get me wrong, I love the .45 Colt 625MG - my first ever S&W was a new 625-7 MG, followed by a spare - a 625-6 MG - both .45 Colt. I also have a 625JM in .45 ACP - which is much more utilitarian. It takes my plinker ball ammo in 'clips - or 255gr LSWC/250gr Gold Dots in Auto Rims. I can change that gold bead Patridge sight in seconds to a HiViz - try that in the black/black MG sights!

I can buy a box of 250 UMC .45 ACP ball ammo, in brass, from WallyWorld - on a Sunday afternoon - for <$92 inc s/t... try to find .45 Colt! Having amassed 2,700 .45 Colt empties, nearly eight years back, I bought a Dillon 550, etc, to 'save money'. Right... it started another hobby - another madness. Of course, I have lots of .45 Colt ammo... and have made everything from .32 S&WL to .454 Casull... and even 7.62x38r for my 1895 Nagants. If you are a reloader, the .45 Colt is a great round.

But you can't run ARs in a .45 Colt before the conversion, either, so the conversion doesn't lose anything. It just adds the .45ACP capability. ;)

There is another concern, though, and that's the "jump" factor. Since the distance from the ACP case to the barrel is greater than that of the LC case, the bullet has a greater jump in ACP, which may have a negative effect on accuracy. I have read of this concern, but I haven't read of anyone actually documenting it.

Well.....I picked up my 45LC MG from my FFL this AM.

She sure is a beauty! However, I think that the moon clips were INDEED put in there by mistake.

This gun will chamber 45 LC shells and ONLY those. if ANYONE WANTS THE moon clips, PM me and I'll give them to you FOC.

As an owner of a truly sublime 45 ACP auto, I can for-see no use to me for the moon clips.:)

The 45 LC cartridge has more power as STOCK than the equivalent 45 ACP does. It's 25 grains heavier and also has a slight edge in MV.

So why have a revolver that is chambered for 45 ACP? To me it's almost how I feel about the 41 magnum...no need for it if you have a 357 & a 44. Where does it fit? Other than wanting to own one of each of these... which I can completely understand!:)

All that being said...I truly LOVE these S&W guns. IMO. They are the BENCHMARK for all other makers to produce by.:)

I have owned both. I would describe all Mountain Guns as easy to carry but not fun to shoot. They have light barrels that allow the gun to recoil briskly, as compared to the same gun with a heavier barrel.
My 625 mountain gun was like this. I owned a 620; which is a .357 with a light 2 piece barrel. I sold it because it bruised the web of my hand every time I shot it. I now have a 4" model 686 that is basically the same gun with a full underlug. It is a joy to shoot.
If you plan to carry alot but not shoot much, the Mountain Guns may be the better choice. Just don't plan to enjoy shooting them with full power loads.

I have yet to shoot it. But I have a wide variety of shells at my disposal.

I bought 900 rnds of 45 LC. 400 of the standard 255 gr RN, 200 rnds. Win STHP, and 300 of Buffalo Bore. 200 of the 255 gr. Keith LSWC, and a hundred of the 200 gr. SPEER GOLD DOT HP.

THAT said, my 4" 629-5 weighs in at 41.5 oz. The 4" MG is 39.5 oz. 2 oz. can't make THAT much of a dif. in recoil. Espacially since a 44 mag has much more kick than a 45 Colt CTG.

Honestly, I can't see the MG being uncomfortable to shoot even with the 255 gr. Keith bullet. When I don't feel that my 629 is uncomfortable AT ALL with full power MAG loads.

But I shall see...:D Love this place though, It's the BEST!:D

You can have the 45LC cut for moon clips and shoot 45 acp out of it to. Then you have the best of both worlds.

I saw a 3" 625 45 LC on Gunbroker.com this morning. Those are very rare aren't they?

IMHO, the M625 Mountain Gun in .45 ACP is the best fighting revolver ever built. With full moonclips, it reloads as fast as a semiauto with magazines. I carried a M625 during my police days and could reload FASTER than most of my fellow officers could armed with their semiautos. I used a large double speed loader pouch and could put two loaded full moonclips, one with the bullets down and one with the bullets up, in each pouch, for a total of 24 rounds.

There is a much larger selection of .45 ACP factory loads than there are .45 Colt loadings. Since you shouldn't use Ruger Blackhawk level .45 Colt loads in a &W, there isn't an advantage to the .45 Colt. Another BIG, BIG plus is cost. .45 ACP is much cheaper than .45 Colt.

Now, I have shot and owned a bunch of .45 Colt revolvers. Heck, the first firearm I ever shot was a Colt Bisley in .45 Colt at the age of 5. I'll always have a few .45 Colts in the safe. But my "go-to gun" is my .45 ACP Mountain Gun.
