Found a 45 acp Mountain Gun

I know it is poor form to start this thread before I have pictures but I finally found a 45 acp 625-6 complete with box. Won't be delivered for a week or two but I'm pretty excited! I now have Mountain guns in 686-4 (357mag), 629-5 (44mag), 625-6(45acp), and 625-7(45colt). I'll keep my eyes open for a 657 to round out the family. I promise to post a pic of all 4 once I take delivery. I'm looking for suggestions (with pics if possible) for nice wood grips for the Mtn guns. They are currently all wearing factory rubbers, but that won't do for long!

Sounds like a trend for collecting Mountain guns! I only have one - a 625-6 in .45 LC. I can see how it can become addictive!

Boy Congratulations, nice bunch of guns.

If it were me, I'd get a set of Herretts Jordan Troopers. I like the feel, they tame recoil, & are fantastic for fast DA shooting.

Congratulations on your score! I just posted pics in your other thread of my 5" M-625 that I had a barrel swap done on and now it sports a 4" MG barrel.

It is much easier to pack around now with the shorter, lighter barrel. I still have the rubber Pachmyr grips on mine, but I am looking at a set of Hogue checkered Bantam grips in Pau Ferro...I have a set on my 3" M-629 and they are great.....

I've got several sets of Round to Square Ahrends retro combats ordered for the Mtn guns...Still promising a pic once they are dressed up!

Congrats on the .45 ACP version of the Mountain Gun! Unfortunately it's an example of "hype" over practicality, probably thanks to a healthy misunderstanding of just how anemic is the .45ACP when compared to cartridges intended to deal with dangerous animals.
Having said all that, I like the ACP in a revolver and with heavier bullets and handloading it can turn in some mighty impressive results.

So is it impressive or anemic?

The factory loadings are good antipersonnel rounds. As you said, if you handload, you can get a fairly powerful cartridge. Think 240 grain JHC at 1100 fps, which is the same level as a reduced 44 magnum. That should work for what we have in these eastern mountains. I would probably choose something bigger out west.

Yeah, I doubt I'd ever use 45 acp for a true "Mountain" gun, in the sense that it may be used for dangerous animals. I've got 45 colt and 44 mag versions that with the proper loads would be preferable for that. I still like the 4" tapered barrel and other features of the Mountain Gun design for a 45 acp revolver for plinking, targets and for personal defense against 2 legged dangerous animals though. Besides, if we only had guns that were 100% practical, most of our collections would be a lot smaller!

I'm not ready to call a .452, 230gr, SWC, @ 840fps, anemic. Placed correctly it'll solve a lot of problems.
Placed incorrectly, a .458 Win Mag. will get you into trouble!
