My wife got this old 38-44 HD back last October. It is in excellent mechanical condition with all matching numbers and has maybe 90%+ original finish but was flawed by a huge chip out of the left grip. I contacted DWFAN about repairing the grips last November at about the time my wife went into surgery for a total knee replacement. I requested a historical letter from Roy while she recuperated from surgery. Now everything has come together. I received the letter from Roy showing that the revolver shipped to Cullum & Boren, Dallas Texas on January 7, 1937. DWFAN returned the grips to me just after the first of the year. Joan's surgery complications prevented me from posting until now.

The grips are absolutely beautiful. DWFAN repaired the chip and refinished them so its impossible to tell where the repair was made. Joan hasn't seen them on the revolver yet as she is still at a nursing facility but I did show her the grips. She is absolutely thrilled and can't wait to try them out even if she has to shoot from a wheelchair.

Here are some before and after photos. Any comments are welcome. Thanks DWFAN for a perfect job.

It's magic, I tell you it's gol durn magic.

Great looking gun and grips.

A beautiful gun with beautiful stocks made more beautiful by a masterful restoration. I love it!

.38/44 HDs deserve all the respect they can get, and this one got a boatload of it with that skilled repair. Congratulations to you and your wife. I'm sorry she had to put up with the knee replacement, but maybe the improved status of this wonderful handgun will help with the recovery.

Charlie,
That gun of your wife's is just beautiful.
The fine job Paul did on those grips really enhances a wonderful piece of history.
She'll enjoy it for sure.

Your wife must be an exceptional woman to appreciate a fine heavy duty like that.
Having undergone knee surgery last year myself, here's to wishing her a thorough and pain free recovery!

Prayers for her recovery , Allen

What a great resoration job on the stocks! I'm sure your wife will appreciate your efforts to put some sparkle back into that old HD.

Congrats on a great gun!

And, wishing your wife a speedy recovery!

All I need to do is obtain a S&W worthy of that level of restoration. Beautiful.

.... Any comments are welcome....

That one is nearly identical to mine. Mine's in the 49000 serial range. Mine occasionally likes to hide in this old Heiser rig.... :D

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. Joan has been bitten by the old S&W bug hard - so hard that she may try to give 1Aspenhill a run for his money. LOL!! Naah, just joking. I'm glad that she is interested in something like S&Ws though instead of other "stuff". :D

Mark, your HD is only a few numbers from Joan's. Thats a fine revolver and holster.
