Early .22 Outdoorsman with neat grip adapter

traded for this one Saturday at the "NEW" Springfield, MO gun show. wasn't going to buy or trade for anything, BUT, when I saw this custom hand made grip adapter and the pinkie cut out on the bottom of the left stock I knew I "needed" it. it has the initials of a Dr from St Louis, MO engraved on the side plate and I know that turns a lot of collectors off but it didn't bother me. I fell in love with the grips so I ignored the engraving.. SN 655889 with a gold bead so some time in 1931 I guess. I can't get logged in on the S&WCA forum right now but when I do I will request a ship time. might letter this one. enjoy and if you know who did this work please let me know. Lee

I'd almost bet that one is a bit later than 1931. We know the so-called 'Coast Guard' K-22s were shipped in 1935, and they were in the 650XXX serial range.

For what it's worth, 649663 shipped in March of 1933, while 657941 went out the door in August of 1936.

I guess I was basing it on the gold bead which I have read were only on the first 500 in 1931. oops. my bad for thinking. Lee

Very nice grip adapter.
The shape looks alot like the aluminum post war ones , wonder if yours inspired them to use that shape.
The early K22 OD's are easy to spot because they have a single rear elevation screw with no set screw.
Im guessing your gold bead fs was special order, perhaps the engraving was also done at the factory.
My closest is Serial 655394 Shipped Jan 1936 .
My 1931 single rear screw K22 Od with gold bead has a 634xxx serial.

Cool gun and great adapter. I wouldn't be surprised if the gold front was special ordered.

The adapter is just like another I saw on here in the past and have been trying to find it for a week or so. Another very recent thread on here about drill holes in the grip frame has created a lot of talk about this type of adapter. If possible could you share a picture of the screw and maybe the back of this adapter? Been tempted to get one made for my K22 OD this has a drilled hole.

The early K-22s came with the gold bead sight, but they could be special ordered after the change to the stainless steel bead. My gun, 661640 shipped April 6, 1937 to Cullum & Boren in Dallas with stainless steel bead. In that time period the invoices were two to a page. So I got the invoice for mine and another. Just happens the other was for a K-22 Target 6" with Call gold bead sight.

That is a beautiful firearm. The engraving only adds value in my eyes. How someone would prefer the new stuff to that wonderful piece of industrial art is beyond me.
