I purchased this early 29-2 at a local gun show. I could not pass it up. It came with its original clam shell presentation case in pretty nice shape. It has hardly been fired. Serial number is S2315XX.

hey that's a nice one,

what'd that cost ya 3 or 4 hundred bucks?

Nice gun with nice Coke grips. Don't know what you had to give for it but you got a good looking one.
Let me add, it should be 1963.

You got a great buy on my favorite model. I have a nickel 4 screw 29 that only predates yours by just a little.

If it does date to 1963 that is the year I graduated from High School on my 18th birthday. There was a four screw pre 29 there as well. The price tag on it was $1,800. This 29-2 was in nicer shape and I already have a four screw pre 29. I picked this up at the Vallejo show on Dec 4.

I think you got a great deal and esp.in Cali.

I second that !!

Very nice! That has to be a very early 29-2, I have a 29-1 with serial S2288**. Additionally, to pay less than $1,000.00 here in California is quite an accomplishment for that revolver. Congratulations!

OUTSTANDING!
Beautiful revolver. I'd say you got a very good deal. Can you feel me turning green with shameless envy? Enjoy!

My 29-3 S/N 231224 lettered to Sep 20 1963 very near yours.
It came with Cokes and about in 97% or so condition, just a hint of carry wear and one little 'nick' on the frame above the yoke.
Bought 4 years ago from a small shop in Red Bank TN, when the guy brought it out all I saw was the stocks, took a few seconds to see a handgun attached.
When he told me "$400 out the door" I almost fell out.
On a whim I had it lettered and it came back to the above date, which as fate would have it was my 3rd birthday! That is one I'll never part with.
With all the restrictive gun laws we hear about in Kali it is really nice to see someone end up with such a fine firearm as yours. Hang onto it as long as you can.
Congrats!

1963 I Think

Here is one I traded Kevin out of last year and also worked a trade with Jim for the box, which is the first 4" clamshell I have seen. The tapered sight adjuster is correct but the other two tools are most likely not. S231xxx

late 60s Model 29-2

My first attempt to post a photo on this forum, so apologies if it doesn't show-up. My Model 29-2 was purchased from a Michigan gun dealer circa 1977. He told me he got it from a local S&W collector and that it had been manufactured in the late 1960s. Maybe somebody here can confirm the year of manufacture, as the serial number is: S253015?
I carried it on Detroit PD street duty for the next 22 years and it is a great shooter. I usually shot 'Sharpshooter' with it on annual qualification (50 rounds of full factory ammo, mid-range was not allowed on qualif. day, but could be carried on the street, as well as .44 specials). One year I shot expert with it, using full factory ammo, which I was proud of, although we had some officers who did that every year with a
.44 mag. This gun has some holster wear to the blueing but still shoots great and I'll keep it until death is imminent.
