I have a couple of questions regarding display case inserts for early Model 57 revolvers.

Did the early inserts with the cloth material have a base made of cardboard and not styrofoam or plastic?

How many years did Smith & Wesson use the cloth material in these cases before changing to the flocked inserts?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

The blue velour material was used only for the first year of the 57s (1964), perhaps a few later but basically one year. I don't know what the material was under it but jcelect may be along and he'll know, or Doc44. Those cases are really hard to find, harder than the correct gun to go in one I think.

This is an educated guess as I have not disassembled a first year case for a Model 57, but I believe the bottom insert is Styrofoam and the top insert is foam rubber. The first Model 57s were shipped in March 1964 and the transition to the "clamshell" case began in the summer of 1965, so the velour lined case was used for a little over a year.

This is the bottom liner of the Velour case. It is high density foam, like the foam used for arrow back stops, and the top is foam rubber.
