I have an old model 41 Smith that I am curious about as to it's date of manufacture . It is a long barrel gun with the muzzle brake. The serial number is 23938 , and it is marked model 41 on the right side. Any help would be appreciated .
The S&W book isn't real helpful as the pre-A prefix serials are just noted as starting in 1954 at 1001 and continuing to 115000 in 1970 with the A prefix serials starting at A115001 in 1970.
However, there have been some efforts over on the rimfire.com forum to record Model 41 serials numbers and identifying manufacture date ranges based on matching boxes, paperwork, etc.
That data suggest yours is from 1959-1960.
Serial #___ Date of Mfg.
104XX_______ 1958
149XX_______ 1959
189XX_______ 1959
295XX_______ 1960
1120XX______ 1969
114XXX____ ~ 1969
Thanks, I got to thinking about the gun (Haven't shot it in several years) and I recalled that when I bought it , it had a 5 inch sporter wt. barrel on it. I found the long barrel somewhere and put it on because it was easier to shoot. It's a very smooth working gun.
Thanks again .
