i hear so many bad things about this model. i found one for sale for $200. should i steer clear?

Depends on condition and gauge. NIB, it would be a bargain. Well used or Police surplus, probably not. Ed.

I agree with Ed, and will add that unless you want it for an S&W collectible, I would not buy. If I wanted a home defense gun or a "shooter," I would look at other models.
