I'm new to ebay and I've been bidding on some vintage pocket knives. Just now I placed a bid for $25.00 with 3 seconds to go. The winning bid was $21.50. Any idea what happened?

Just a guess, but since you state that you're "new to ebay", maybe the buyer rejected your bid and took the bid from someone that has more feedback?

Like I said, just a guess...

Assuming you did not win the item with the $21.50, I would say you got just a bit too close to the end with your snipe. A delay that you did not realize at your end or at their end and your bid didn't get in before the close.

I tend to do the same thing for an item I really want but I normally do not go under 10 seconds.

Put the bid you are willing to pay with 6-7 seconds to go. That's the way the game is played and I've been beaten with 6 sec to go and beat someone with 6 to go. Didn't know I could type that fast. With 5 sec to go and a lot of last second bids going in, I've lost the way you did. Like it or not, that's the way it is. Larry

I don't bother with the last second bidding. I determine what is the highest amount I willing pay for the item and bid that amount a day or so before the auction ends. If I will the item, then I'm happy. If I don't win the item, then it was priced more than I was wiling to bay. You never get caught bidding too late to have your bid accepted.

I used by and sell on E-Bay and nothing would make Me madder than a Bid sniper and there is not enough time to raise My bid.
After E-Bay forced Us to use Pay-Pal and no other method of Payment I cancelled My Account and refuse to use Them.
They just got too greedy among other things for My liking.

Yea, I get that. But I got tired of putting in my highest bid only to have someone chip away until they got to that point and paid 50 cents or a buck more than I was willing to pay. So, for items I would like but don't "really" want I put in what I think is a fair price and wait and see. For items I really want, I put in what I am willing to pay at the very last moment. That might be $20 more than what it goes for so I save. It also might be under what the current bidder or some other sniper is willing to go so I don't get it.

I don't buy much on eBay anymore. Just got too much junk around the house as it is.

Geez my God, bragging snipers, don't any of you have any pride?

Added:

After reading the responses to this post, I still believe that there is something wrong with "Sniping". Sorry I can't explain why I feel this way, but I do.

I also realize that from time to time I need to keep my opinion to myself, and this is one of those times. So if I offended anyone I'm SORRY.

Hmmm, not intending to "brag." Merely telling the OP why he did not get the item he bid on and an alternative method. He may not have gotten it. The winning bidder may have put in a bid above his max.

Not sure where pride comes into play with this type of bidding but if it violates your standards, well...Okee doke. Whatever you want to do is fine with me.

And yes, I would think eBay would indeed use the Gunbroker 15 minute method. It would eliminate sniping and likely bring in more money for the seller and them. But that ain't how it works now.

There seems to be a lot of folks that claim they won't bid on a reserve auction, well I won't bid on a 15 minute rule auction because of the "nibblers" (or the shills....)

What type of Internet connection do you have? If you are on satellite then your $25 bid likely arrive late if it said 3 seconds on your screen.

I have high speed cable and I would not cut it that fine. A little system latency or a server burp on your packet and you are SOL.

Steve, I'm on a very fast system to down load but the up load ain't nothin to brag about.

To those critical of sniping, it seems to be the only way to get the most desirable items. I lost a bunch before I realized that.
I did pick up a few decent knives on Buy It Now.

YES, I am very proud of my sniping. I have over 900 winning bids on eBay and those are only the ones that have posted feedback. I didn't make the rules but I will certainly play by them. In an eBay auction there is no prize for second place and if I need to be the final bidder with 3 seconds to go to win an item, so be it.

I don't use sniping software and many times I have had to stay up late to win an auction that ended after midnight eastern time.

Hate the game, not the player. ;)

I sold off a large collection of Indian War artifacts and relics. Over 150 individual auctions, all with reserves. I can't think of one that didn't sit bid-less for 6 days, 23 hours and 50 minutes with dozens of watchers just waiting to snipe. I enjoyed the heck out of watching the last couple minutes of all those sales.
