I got the recipe and read some comments from Ed's notes, but I'm still a little unclear about the kerosene. One recipe said K1 kerosene, like what is used for space heaters, which I have. Another recipe specified "deodorized" kerosene, which I'm not familiar with. I have "lamp oil" in a plastic bottle, for oil lamps, like you get at Walmart. Is this what I should use, or the K1 that goes in the heater?

Instead of mixing up concoctions I just clean/bathe my handguns with diesel fuel. Great solvent and makes bluing look great. I don't know how Ed's Red or anything else could improve upon it........except the smell.

Use the K1.
I recently mixed a batch and it works great.

K1 is another name for deodorized kerosene, I buy K1 in a 5 gallon gerry can at my local filling station for my space heater in my garage. It's better than half the price of the gallon cans at wallyworld.

That reminds me I need to get some acetone for another batch of ER.

Thanks guys. I think I have everything here that I need to make a test batch. I think I'm going to make the acetone free version for now, so I don't smell up the whole house with it, but I'm sure it can be a gateway to the hard stuff:rolleyes:.

I agree with everyone on the K1. I ran into a problem where I live that I had to have a blue container for K1 in bulk. I have a propane space heater so I don't buy my K1 in bulk. I just buy mine at WalMart. I mix my Ed's Red with acetone as I shoot shotgun and it does knock out the plastic fouling on the barrels.

My version of Ed's Red:

50/50 mix of Amsoil Synthetic ATF and Kroil. I've been using it for years. It's cheap and works very well.

Good luck.

I have a jar of it mixed up. I find it too messy for nice revolvers and pistols. Great for shotguns and military type rifles. The acetone is needed for shotguns for the plastic junk in the barrel.

I even added 1 part synthetic oil. Probably over kill with the ATF fluid.
