Ejection angle and distance changed

My full sized 9mm has always ejected a about a 45 degree angle over my right shoulder and land about 10 feet away. Today at the range every round hit my hat right above the bill. Basically it was coming straight back and with less velocity. What would cause that? The ammo seemed fine and was working in my Shield normally but I didn't have any other rounds with me to try. Could it be my springs or the ejector? I probably have about 8000 rounds through it. Any ideas?

If you haven't changed the recoil spring, that's the most likely cause.

It could be the ejector, but I'd buy a new recoil spring first.

Just curious if this was ammo you've used before in the full size? Was it all the same ammo on this trip? 8K rounds--probably time for a new recoil spring in any case.

Yep, all ammo I've used before and all from the same case today (I only buy cases these days). Ordered a new recoil spring now.

Check your extractor for a broken part of the hook. That can change the angle and velocity of the ejection.

I appreciate the help, but my doctor gave me a little pill and now I don't have any trouble with that

What caused such a change? Try cleaning the extractor with a
pick. (Not a steel one) It sounds like a possible built-up obstruction.
If it continues afterwards give S&W CS a call. It really sounds like
something interfering regarding extraction. The ejector is usually cleaned when cleaning. Many fail to check the extractor.

Thanks. I'll double check the extractor as well. I clean the visible part of it every time but I have only removed it once and I think I'll pop out the pin and look under it to see if there is some buildup
