My wife has been wanting me to build her a garden for years but I know I would end up working it also and I don't like bending over any more or being on my hands and knees for hours. I was thinking about some kind of elevated garden about 3 feet high wouldn't be too bad and wondering if any body had one of these or knew anything about them.

I have never dome it but a lot of people do the garden in boxes these days. It should work fine as long as you build the base strong enough to hold the soil and the moisture in it. They are easier to manage as far as weeds and watering goes. There should be plenty of information on youtube and google showing examples as well.

You can make an elevated garden with old rail road ties or cinder blocks and 2x6 lumber for support of the second run of blocks.
Five gallon (white) buckets for each tomato plant (or painted) to keep the heat down from the sun.

I have a whiskey keg cut in half that I put three tomato plants in.....
but make sure that you can support the plants, for proper growth !!

I just came in for a break from doing exactly what your talking about.
I'm doing this for the same reason I'm just getting to old to do inground gardening so I'm going with raised beds.
Depending on what you grow 3 feet might be to high. If you grow tomatoes they will get 4-5 feet high and would be hard to reach the tops.
The beds I'm putting in are 2x12 two layers high 6 beds 4x8 and one 4x4 for herbs. When the main frames are complete and filled I'll put a 1x8 on top to use as a bench while working.

Mel Bartholomew square foot gardening

My wife and I have been using the Mel Bartholomew square foot gardening method for about 30 years now. This is a method, using a prepared growing media that you assemble yourself that is described in his book and not using soil as we are all familiar with. Usually the harvest is much larger than that of a typical soil type garden also tending / weeding is much easier.

Starting a square foot garden is however somewhat expensive at the beginning so be prepared to shell out some bucks but the back breaking labor is gone and a hoe and shovel and tiller are no longer needed. Having used this method for so many years we would not want to go back to a typical backyard garden again.

Watch Mel Bartholomew square foot gardening videos on youtube

If you would be interested I would suggest that you buy the book or pick it up at the library that I have linked below.
